Impact America

AmeriCorps Birmingham, AL

Impact America activates recent college graduates to address consequences of poverty through health, economic, and education-based initiatives – creating lasting impact in local communities. These initiatives include FocusFirst, a high tech vision care initiative for young children and SaveFirst, a free tax preparation program for low-income families. FocusFirst: A High-Tech Vision Care Initiative provides a cost-effective direct response to the vision problems of children who live in urban and rural communities in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. AmeriCorps members and volunteers provide free vision screenings to young children using high-tech photo optic scan cameras. All children failing the screenings receive free follow-up care through a partner nonprofit. SaveFirst: A High-Quality Tax Preparation Initiative trains college, graduate, and law students to provide free tax preparation services and opportunities for savings to low-income, working families in Alabama and South Carolina.
