High School Principal (SY 2024-2025 Pool)

Full-Time and Permanent; 7.5 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year; Grade O

DEFINITION

Administers the instructional, support and operational functions of a high school; manages the staff, program and physical resources; performs related division wide administrative duties as required or assigned.

SUPERVISION

Duties are performed under the direction of an Executive Director. Work is reviewed in terms of compatibility with program goals and plans in assigned areas of responsibility. Direct supervision is exercised over professional, technical, and support staff assigned to the school to which assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the highest level of administration and supervision at a high school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (Performs a variety of duties itemized below.)

Studies the educational needs of the community served by the school and develops plans for meeting them.

Adapts educational programs approved by the School Board to the particular needs of the community served, including special programs where appropriate.

Directs the preparation of a master schedule for the implementation of an educational program with optimum use of facilities and staff.

Supervises the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and materials.

Provides for and performs continuing observation, supervision, and evaluation of faculty and administrative and support staff.

Directs the development and implementation of staff development and training programs.

Reports to the appropriate resources regarding the school's needs with respect to personnel, curriculum, equipment, and supplies.

Prepares the school budget requests and administers the budget once approved, including control of disbursements of all appropriated funds.

Supervises public health related services.

Interviews prospective employees and makes recommendations regarding their employment; recommends dismissal of unsatisfactory employees, handling grievance and staff relations problems.

Supervises the planning, management, and financing of a comprehensive student activities program and related community activities, attending or arranging for designees at all activities.

Oversees the maintenance of standards concerning student discipline, health, safety, and general welfare.

Supervises and develops a comprehensive intramural and interscholastic athletic program.

Consults with and coordinates the services of area and central office resource personnel to ensure availability of effective assistance to classroom teachers.

Oversees building and grounds maintenance activities.

Performs division wide instructional or management duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Broad knowledge of principles and practices of modern public school secondary education and an ability to apply them to the needs of the school.

Broad knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and public school administration and organization.

Thorough knowledge of applicable statute school law and case law affecting school operations.

Good knowledge of effective operations practices (e.g., facility maintenance, student transportation, food services).

Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate 9th-12th grade teaching, support services, student activities (including inter-scholastic athletics), and school-community relations programs.

Ability to plan and supervise and evaluate the work of professional and support staff.

Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the general public.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Education, Training And Experience Requirements

Master's degree in school administration with experience in middle school or high school teaching and as an assistant principal, coordinator or director.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Postgraduate Professional License with one or more high school subject teaching endorsements; administration and supervision endorsement required.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

Work requires normal physical attributes required for walking, standing sitting, operating office equipment, communication equipment, lifting, moving, carrying light equipment, supplies, etc.

HAZARDS

Most of the time, work involves only exposure to normal, everyday risks; however, some activities may involve working with students with disabilities, that requires knowledge of intervention and restraint techniques.

May be required to intervene to prevent/stop physical conflicts among students; performs crowd control tasks at athletic events.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS

Include activities in schools, in the community, and require one to have or arrange for own transportation.

Work is subject to deadlines and inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of many divergent groups.

Extensive night and weekend activities.

Work is located in schools, and is subject to normal interruptions.

Some activities involve contact with irate parents and students.

Bus and automobile traffic monitoring and night response to intrusions/fire or other emergencies are endemic to the role of Principal.
