Manhattan Country School seeks a full-time High School Placement Director for the 2024-2025 school year.

Manhattan Country School is a pre-K through 8th grade school in New York City that is recognized for its strong academic program, racial and economic diversity, social justice activism, and emphasis on environmental education that features a working farm in the Catskills in Roxbury, New York. The High School Placement Director will guide 7th and 8th grade families in the high school application process. The High School Placement Director reports to the Upper School Director and they will work closely together to support students and families.

The ideal candidate will be able to articulate an educational vision that is in keeping with the school’s mission. The candidate should be able to work collaboratively, be flexible, take initiative, have a sense of humor, enjoy working with children of all ages, demonstrate strong listening and communication skills, be skilled with technology, and be able to think creatively and holistically about ways to build the placement program and support families.

Duties And Responsibilities

The High School Placement Director

  • Counsels 8th grade students and families as they go through the high school process
  • Cultivates relationships with high schools in New York City and nearby boarding schools
  • Gathers notes and writes teacher recommendations on behalf of the 8th grade team for students applying to independent day and boarding schools, and Catholic schools
  • Actively advocates for students with the independent and Catholic schools to which they are applying
  • Compiles transcripts and sends them to schools
  • Helps 8th grade students and families navigate the various online application sites (e.g., Ravenna, SAO, MySchools, etc.)
  • Enters information into the NYC Department of Education MySchools system
  • Organizes information sessions, alumni panels, and meetings for 7th and 8th grade families
  • Attends bi-annual ISAAGNY Admissions/Placement meetings and annual NYSAIS Admissions/Placement Conference when possible
  • May serve as a member of the Admissions Committee
  • Teaches a 7th grade Child Development class
  • Accompanies the 7th grade on a 1-week trip to the MCS Farm in the Catskills
  • Teaches a 6th-8th grade elective
  • Fulfills other various duties, including lunch and park coverage
  • Attends weekly meetings with Upper School Director and 7th-8th grade team

Requirements And Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience teaching or working with 7th and 8th graders
  • Experience with advising or supporting families
  • Experience supporting students with diverse learning styles and needs
  • Strong communication, organizational, and administrative skills
  • Experience in a diverse community or working collaboratively to engage youth in community-building, social and environmental justice, and activism is a plus

This position is covered under the LOC2110 collective bargaining agreement with a full-time salary range of $82,500-$92,500 annually.
