Work Schedule: This position will be on-site 3-5 days a week.

Position Summary

The school counselor supports a comprehensive and robust counseling program by working directly with students and teachers to address students' academic and developmental needs. Through guidance, advocacy, and collaboration, the counselor helps students set education and career goals and develop good decision-making skills. The counselor tracks and manages student records under all applicable laws, regulations, and policies. The person in this role will work under all applicable laws, guidelines, and UVA policies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans and presents programs designed to teach students about social, emotional, and decision-making skills.
  • Advises students about course progression and communicates this information to all stakeholders.
  • Keeps cumulative student portfolios up-to-date and reports to the leadership team as needed.
  • Reviews and interprets student assessment data and effectively communicates the results with students and parents/guardians.
  • Works collaboratively with school leadership on student internship opportunities and tracks student performance.
  • Participates in 504 and IEP meetings for students with diverse learning needs.
  • Gives courteous and prompt service to students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Supports parents, teachers, students, and the Child Welfare & Attendance team to alleviate excessive absences.
  • Prioritizes and addresses requests and assignments professionally.
  • Up-to-date on federal and state laws and regulations regarding child welfare, attendance, and school counseling.
  • Actively participates in departmental, staff, and family meetings.
  • Knowledgeable about individual and group behaviors and individual and community health and social problems related to school-age children.
  • Gives information about curriculum offerings, graduation requirements, scholarship opportunities, technical education programs, dual enrollment programs, college/university application process, and other relative post-secondary programs
  • Attends meetings, collaborates with staff on projects, and participates in professional development opportunities
  • Works under all applicable laws and UVA policies and procedures.
  • Travels occasionally to support statewide mandated test administration and to participate in student-sponsored events.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Familiarity with clerical practices, office procedures, and automated equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
