Who we are looking for

The Head of Engineering will work directly with the CEO of ModeSens and be responsible for overseeing the entire engineering team and all engineering activities, ensuring the engineering support to achieve business goals. This role requires a strategic leader with a deep technical background, exceptional project management skills, and the ability to mentor and grow a team of talented developers. The ideal candidate will be bilingual (English and Mandarin), have significant startup experience, and be adept at managing cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Leadership & Team Management:

- Build, lead, mentor, and inspire a diverse team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

- Conduct performance evaluations, provide professional development opportunities, and build a high-performing engineering team.

• Technical Strategy & Execution:

- Develop and execute the technical strategy aligned with the company’s business objectives.

- Ensure the engineering team delivers scalable, reliable, and high-quality products and solutions.

- Oversee the architecture, design, and implementation of software systems.

- Improve and maintain the stability and performance of the service

• Project Management:

- Manage multiple concurrent engineering projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.

- Implement best practices in project management, including Agile methodologies, to optimize productivity and efficiency.

• Collaboration & Communication:

- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and operations, to align engineering efforts with business goals.

- Communicate technical vision, strategy, and project status to senior leadership and stakeholders.

• Process Improvement:

- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance engineering productivity, quality, and efficiency.

- Establish and enforce engineering standards, documentation, and best practices.

• Innovation & Technology:

- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation within the engineering team.

- Encourage and support experimentation, prototyping, and the adoption of new technologies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Bilingual proficiency in English and Chinese (Mandarin).
• 5 + experience in a senior engineering leadership role in consumer-facing companies, ideally within a startup environment.
• Strong background in backend service development and engineering, with expertise in relevant technologies and frameworks.
• Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
• Strong project management skills, with a track record of successfully delivering complex engineering projects on time and within budget.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
• Passionate about applying technology to redefine the shopping experience for the future with a proactive and forward-thinking approach.

Extra points

• 5+ years of experience in searching, ranking, and recommendation system
• 3+ years of experience with Python, Django, AWS
• Full stack development experience
• Experience managing cross-functional teams and managers
• Prior experience working on an e-commerce or marketplace platform
• Prior experience in related fields like data mining, BI, recommendation, AI.
