HOURS: Varies based on need

SALARY: $40-$45 per hour

Position Overview

The Head Bus Mechanic is responsible for leading a team of mechanics in servicing, maintaining, repairing, and safety-checking all school buses and school-owned vehicles. This role ensures the highest standards of vehicle performance and safety to guarantee smooth and uninterrupted transportation operations for the school.

Additionally, the Head Bus Mechanic is responsible for managing the fleet maintenance system to track and schedule regular maintenance and inspections. They will oversee vendor relationships, ensuring quality service and timely repairs. This role also involves owning the purchasing of parts, ensuring we have the necessary parts readily available to complete required repairs and maintenance.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Servicing, maintaining and repairing of all school vehicles:

  • Overhaul, recondition and repair buses, all school owned vehicles and grounds equipment
  • Tune-ups, general servicing, disassembly/reassemble of various vehicle parts such as: engine, transmission, differential, suspension and brake systems, fuel, electrical and cooling support systems
  • Diagnostic troubleshooting
  • Follow through with the daily repair requests that are supplied by the transportation department
  • Maintains tools and equipment according to all manufacturers’ specifications. Update and note deficiencies of all fleet routinely
  • Expedites all repairs and work requests to give the best possible service
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to ensure efficient and high-quality work performance.
  • Coordinate and prioritize daily tasks and work assignments for the mechanic team, ensuring timely completion of all repairs and maintenance.
  • Assist in budget planning and monitoring related to repair and maintenance activities, ensuring cost-effective operations while maintaining quality standards.
  • Oversee inventory of parts and supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels and efficient use of resources. Coordinate with purchasing to order necessary parts and equipment.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • Keeps up-to-date on Federal, State and local standards and ensures that the Breck fleet meets or exceeds these standards at all times
  • Maintain records and files of fleet maintenance and service
  • Keeps all work areas clean to ensure safe working conditions
  • Assist with snow removal from all parking areas and sidewalks used by the school
  • Maintain inventory of all repair parts, supplies and diesel used by the school fleet.
  • Assist with event parking of vehicles for special activities day or night
  • Day shift, generally 6am-230 pm.
  • Perform any additional assignments directed by the Director of Facilities.

Education And/or Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent skills and/or experience
  • Completion of a 2 year Certificate Program at an approved vocational-tech school
  • Commercial Class B license with school bus endorsement necessary – within 6 months of hire date.
  • School bus endorsement will require random drug and alcohol testing per State/Federal law.
  • Underground Storage Tank Certificate will be needed within 6 months of hire.
  • Familiar with Cummins Insite, Wabco Toolbox, and Allison Doc. diagnostic software would be beneficial.

  • Heavy lifting is involved, must be in good physical condition. Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs. on a routine basis. Physical activity includes bending, stooping, reaching and grabbing
  • Ability to pass a pre-offer Physical Fitness Test.
  • Comfortable with an oxy/acetylene torch and a mig welder.
  • Able and willing to work a flexible full-time schedule, including evenings and weekends.
