Position Title: District-wide Translator/Transcriber

Classification: FT – 12-month Group 5

Reports To: Director of Special Education/Director of ESL Program

Position Goal: The Translator/Transcriber provides district-wide translation and interpretation services to ensure that limited-English proficient parents and families have meaningful access to information about school matters in an accurate and timely manner as mandated by federal policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties may be assigned. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:

  • Supports the District and schools to achieve full compliance with federal, state, and local policy through accurate and timely translation and interpretation services for parents

and families with limited-English proficiency .

  • Creates a welcoming and culturally responsive atmosphere when interacting with parents and families district wide.
  • Collaborates with the administration and staff district-wide to provide guidance to parents and families on the protocols for accessing translation and interpretation services offered by the District.
  • Provides interpretation services at high-stakes meetings such as, but not limited to: IEP meetings, NOREPs, evaluations, parent conferences, expulsion hearings, etc. and maintains confidentiality as per federal, state, and local policy.
  • Assists with interpretation services for students during District-wide standardized testing.
  • Provides bilingual communications from the District and/or schools by:
  • Recording and disseminating district and school messages via phone, text, email, and mobile app, including both general messages and emergency messages.
  • Translating documents, publications, and other text such as, but not limited to, special education documents and reports.
  • Translating both unique posts and posts copied from the district’s various social media channels.
  • Assisting with bilingual communication via multimedia platforms such as videos, on-camera interviews, and radio shows, in collaboration with responsible staff.
  • Provides and/or coordinates translation and interpretation at year-round, family and community engagement activities, including, but not limited to:
  • Needs assessments and surveys
  • Classes and workshops
  • Community engagement events
  • Parent resource centers
  • Recruitment of parents for district activities and volunteer opportunities
  • School board meetings
  • Maintains records of translation and interpretation services provided, including those provided by third-party translators.
  • Attends professional development sessions, as appropriate.

Qualifications/Requirements

Education And/Or Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent required; Post-secondary education, preferred.
  • 1 – 3 years’ experience in translation/interpretation services and/or clerical functions, required.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS And KNOWLEDGE

  • Ability to establish relationships and communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, families, and community members
  • Maintain confidentiality and utilize discretion regarding matters involving students and families.
  • Ability to perform all job duties with integrity and minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated interest in assisting parents.
  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Office technologies, such as Microsoft Office applications (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and Google Suite, as well as the ability to learn new technology quickly.

Language Skills

  • Native-like proficiency in both oral and written English and Spanish is essential.
  • Ability to pass the RSD Translator/Transcriber Assessment.
  • Ability to read and translate technical documents such as school code of conduct, safety rules, special education documents and reports, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to other employees and/or students orally and in writing in both English and Spanish.
  • Ability to assist in the revision and editing of documents translated by others.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add and subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply basic arithmetic calculations.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Ability to apply knowledge of effective translation and interpretation services.
  • Ability to apply advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community.
  • Ability to use appropriate language and accompanying techniques with parents on a one-to-one basis as well as in groups.
  • Ability to work in a demanding service-oriented environment and deal with constant interruptions.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and make work-related decisions using sound judgment and integrity.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and talk or hear. Occasionally the employee will repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion many times as in keyboard use/data entry. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; bend, twist, and stoop. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, such as computerized reports. The employee must be able to attend meetings in the home, school, and community to service the needs of students and families. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The employee is frequently required to interact with the parents, public and other staff. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and exhibit good human relation skills including courtesy, tact and patience. The employee is directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students. Position demands meeting deadlines with severe time constraints and the ability to work required overtime in order to meet reporting deadlines.
