Greenhouse Manager (Full Time, Full Availability)

Basic Function

The manager’s main purpose is to promote the above. The Greenhouse Manager oversees and is accountable for the department’s production, organization, staffing, product line, sales, and profitability through merchandising, inventory/expense control and management skills.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Ensure that each customer receives outstanding customer service by providing a customer friendly environment, including greeting and acknowledging customers, maintaining outstanding standards, solid product knowledge and assisting customers with their questions
  • Achieve profit margin and payroll goals set by store management
  • Generate a product base that attracts customers concerned with quality
  • Control inventory shrinkage, waste, production level, expenses and payroll hours
  • Ensure appropriate merchandise stock levels, presentations & signage
  • Train and develop department staff; develop assistant to completely back you up
  • Set the tone and example for employee morale; continuously seek to improve it
  • Delegate work to improve and maintain smooth and efficient department operation
  • Communicate with staff and store management on a regular basis; give praise to employees
  • Be familiar with and adhere to all laws, i.e., labor, unit pricing, safety, sanitation, etc.
  • Be aware of safety procedures and maintain an employee and customer safe department; abide by the Adams Employee Safety Handbook
  • Refrain from socializing, flirting, and other unprofessional behavior with employees at work
  • Keep alert & train staff to be observant of suspicious persons; notify store managers promptly

Specific Tasks & Duties

  • Check all plants arriving for quality, bugs & healthiness
  • Identify and care for indoor house plants
  • Diagnose disease and pest problems as well as advise remedies
  • Check all invoices for your department for accuracy
  • Set prices for sale items on Tuesday and verify
  • Write transfers on products shipped to other Adams’ stores
  • Keep all areas of your department clean and organized: aisles, shelves, & register
  • Cooperate with the other department managers to have a smooth running store
  • Delegate the work to your staff and get your satisfaction from seeing that they complete the work
  • Maintain proper levels of stock throughout the department to ensure variety, quality and availability
  • Set a good example for your employees – friendliness, politeness, ambition & courtesy
  • Educate your personnel regarding plants and how to handle and display properly. Insist on importance of watering and pruning plants
  • See that you and your staff help all customers promptly and courteously
  • Keep alert as department manager and instill in your personnel to be observant of any suspicious person and notify store managers promptly
  • Managers should refrain from socializing, flirting, and unprofessional behavior with their employees during work
  • As manager, you should listen to your employees and be there to help if needed. Compliment them for a job well done and do this often
  • Make sure all equipment is safe and receives proper maintenance
  • Maintain watering system
  • Communicate with all of Adams’ Greenhouse locations
  • Does all the buying of plants and other products to make greenhouse profitable
  • Researches the market for the best prices and quality of plants

Personnel Related Duties

  • Schedule, supervise and train personnel in your department; develop an assistant
  • Post work schedule for department employees at least 2 days prior to new week; monitor attendance and breaks
  • Create schedule to ensure that you or your assistant are in the department during busy periods
  • Hire and fire all personnel under your control with store manager’s approval
  • Meet with your employees when necessary about department and company policies, rules and problems. Keep them abreast of department changes in products or displays
  • Delegate areas of responsibility to your personnel when possible. Try to convey a feeling of satisfaction in a job well done
  • Educate your staff regarding products and how to handle and display properly. Insist on the importance of product rotation
  • Solicit suggestions from your staff regarding improvements and changes in the department
  • Be certain all new personnel have some form of training or break-in period. Assign new hires to work with your most experienced staff members.
  • Insist your personnel have proper attire and are well groomed
  • Consistently give your staff positive and helpful feedback about their performance
  • Conduct employee evaluations annually or more often if necessary
  • Make pay changes on a timely basis, usually once a year, and get store manager approval
  • Impress on your employees the importance of keeping their salary information confidential
  • Always reprimand in private, not on the floor & not in front of other employees or customers
  • When correcting an employee, terminating an employee or discussing something sensitive, always have another manager, assistant manager or Human Resources with you as a witness. If you are speaking with the opposite sex, always have a manager of the employee’s same sex as your witness.
  • Always praise all of Adams’ stores to create high company morale.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to freely access all areas of the store including selling floor, stock area and register area
  • Ability to operate and use all equipment necessary to run the department including u-boat, pallet jack and hand truck
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Ability to move or handle merchandise throughout the department generally weighing 50-75 pounds
  • Ability to work varied hours/days to oversee store operations
  • Ability to work in hot, humid conditions for long periods of time
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time

Mental/Reasoning Requirements

  • Ability to process information and merchandise
  • Knowledge of plants
  • Ability to communicate with employees and customers
  • Ability to read, count and write to accurately complete all documentation
  • Ability to use critical thinking processes to solve problems, handle conflicts and serve the customer
  • Two to three years of management experience
  • Two to three years of greenhouse experience
  • Communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, and managers
