Job Description

The Times Graphics team is looking for a creative and versatile 3-D specialist who can build, animate, style and render models for breaking news, enterprise and investigative projects.

3-D modeling has been the foundation of many high-profile visual stories in recent years, including:


  • A reconstruction of what the Tulsa massacre destroyed.
  • A detailed demonstration of the effectiveness of masks at a microscopic level.
  • An investigation into the causes of a Miami building collapse.
  • A spatial investigation into a deadly fire in the Bronx.
  • A 3-D tour of where classified documents were stored at Mar-a-Lago,
  • A forensic analysis of an apartment building collapse in the Turkey earthquakes.


Working closely with fellow members of the Graphics team and reporters across the newsroom, you will play an important role in helping shape visual reconstructions and investigations, and stories that rely on spatial analysis or provide immersive experiences for readers.

Attention to detail and precision are essential for this job. A background in news graphics, engineering, architecture or forensic reconstruction is preferred.

Responsibilities


  • Create and build detailed and accurate 3-D models from scratch, using a variety of open source references and other material.
  • Analyze and interpret detailed construction plans, engineering reports, photos and videos.
  • Interview experts and officials to obtain details necessary to build 3-D models.
  • Identify details in the 3-D model that are important and relevant to the story.
  • Execute camera movements and choreograph 3-D scenes on deadline.
  • Composite, stylize and add polish to finished renders.


Basic Qualifications


  • 3+ years of 3-D modeling experience
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple levels of the 3-D workflow, including modeling, animation, lighting, texturing, rendering and compositing.
  • Expertise in at least one of the major 3-D applications, like Blender, Maya or Cinema 4D, and working knowledge of other 3-D softwares.
  • Strong After Effects skills to composite scenes after rendering and to execute motion graphics.
  • Proficiency in other Adobe Suite programs.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with Python and/or MEL.
  • Familiarity with GIS and cartography.
  • Familiarity with parametric modeling.
  • Experience working with 3-D content in a WebGL pipeline.
  • Ability to execute different rendering styles.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,711.60 and $136,000.00.
