Summary

The successful candidate will be a passionate, mission-driven, and collaborative educator who desires an opportunity to teach in a diverse and welcoming school environment. This teacher will instruct his/her mathematics students blending Eureka Math with District tools and will be expected to provide instruction that is appropriately modified to address individual student needs. This teacher will work with the school administration, our math coach, and members of grade level teams, where assigned to positively manage student behavior, use student level data to inform instruction, and collaborate in a standards-based environment to provide exceptional education to students. Above all, the successful teacher should be guided by an ethos of care and an unwavering belief in the ability of ALL students to reach their potential.

Major Duties And Responsibilities

  • This position involves teaching math 4 periods a day using best practices in differentiating instruction.
  • Teach math by using and modifying district curriculum and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Plan and execute appropriate instructional and learning strategies. These activities, materials, and assignments will be expected to reflect a deep understanding of the needs (academic and social/emotional) of students.
  • Use student level data to inform instruction and plan effective lessons/interventions for students.
  • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of math content, methods, and principles of effective elementary instruction
  • Promotes the learning and growth of all students through instructional practices that establish high expectations, create a safe and effective classroom environment, and demonstrate cultural proficiency.
  • Fosters the learning and growth of all students through effective partnerships with families and caregivers.
  • Collaborates effectively with specialists, instructional coaches, administrators and parents to foster positive social, emotional and academic development for our students.
  • Ensures, through effective collaboration with colleagues (chiefly ESL and Special Education teachers), that identified strategies that promote the success of all students in the classroom are in place.
  • Works under the general supervision of the building principal and or another designated administrator, manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement.
  • Provides structure in the classroom by building and maintaining a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required); Master’s Degree (Preferred)
  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in math grades 6-8
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (Required within 1-year of start date)
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience and working in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred.
  • Proven track record of raising student achievement scores in an urban/turnaround environment highly desired.
  • Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication suites (Remind preferred), Google G-Suite Apps, etc.) desirable.
  • Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Dual certification is a plus
  • Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus
  • Current authorization to work in the United States

Work Year: Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185 day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days). Collins Middle School teachers receive an additional 4% differential on top of their base salary for a slightly longer (7 hour) school day. Collins Middle School teachers receive an additional 4% differential on top of their base salary for a slightly longer (7 hour) school day.
