At ACRE, the Core Product Manager Skill Set includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Domain Knowledge - Product Managers are expected to be able to share key data and concepts about Visitor Management. They should know the market size, how much of the market we have, which competitors are ahead or behind of us and by how much (features, market share, routes to market, disruptive technologies etc). Product Managers should know what customer pain points need to be addressed, and should be creatively thinking about new approaches, although not with disregard for ‘the past’. Product Managers need to consider both global as well as regional needs and manage the internal view vs the external dynamics.

  • Communication Skills - Product Managers should be capable of explaining the elevator pitch of visitor management to any audience in a manner that they ‘get it’ as well as being able to dive into detail when questioned. This should be an engaging, enthusiastic presentation style

  • Research Skills - A portion of a Product Managers time should be spent researching and curating what customers need from our products. This can be time spent online, as well as time spent in front of customers either 1:1 or in trade show settings. Great product managers understand the intricacies of their product and their customers and know how to specify and market products that will relieve pain points and retain customers as loyal and supportive customers

  • Business Skills - Understanding the market dynamics, competitor cost points and our cost points is an essential part of a Product Managers skill set. Assessing the market for added penetration or new upsell from new features goes hand in hand with this skill set, as does the responsibility for the margin generated by each product in the Product Managers portfolio. General business financial modelling is also an important skill set so that the Product Manager can accurately understand (and present) the contribution of the product to the overall business, or the cost of not enhancing a product in a particular way.

  • Strategic Thinking and Planning - Product Managers need to apply both short term and long-term thinking to product and feature set creation. They need to understand the product pipeline and development process, time to market, such that the appropriate features are developed in the right order to maximize value creation. Furthermore, the Product Manager should demonstrate experience of portfolio and business migrations – these needs require ‘big picture’ thinking and mental skills for success

  • Coordination – Product Managers need project management skills and strong interpersonal / interdepartmental liaison skills to drive success in product launch activities. Key relationships with Operations, Sales, Product Marketing, Quality and other departments are critical to smooth successful product launches.
