    This position is located at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

    Purpose

    We are looking for a highly motivated person who is interested in managing a geochemistry and geology laboratory. The geochemistry and geology laboratories support the core research center at the Bureau of Economic Geology. Laboratory equipment includes geological sample preparation (sample pulverization, collecting core plug samples, and labelling core), isotope ratio mass spectrometry for carbonates and organic matter characterization, and portable X-ray fluorescence core scanning. Additional characterization equipment includes, but is not limited to, Proceq Rebound Hammer, RockEval pyrolysis, core permeameter, and core photography. The successful candidate will coordinate sample collection and analysis for students and researchers in the Bureau of Economic geology, maintain and calibrate analytical equipment, order supplies, maintain a database of sample analyses, and ensure QA/QC across all analytical methods.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintaining, operating, and calibrating portable XRF equipment and stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer.
    • Training students and researchers to use analytical geochemical equipment.
    • Working with students and researchers to collect and obtain samples from geological core.


    Required Qualifications

    A Bachelor's degree in geology, chemistry, material science, biology, or physics is required with two years of experience. Demonstrated experience in operating and calibrating X-ray fluorescence and isotope ratio mass spectrometry instruments. Excellent data management skills. Python coding for database querying and calibration development. Demonstrated report writing skills. Excellent communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in laboratory settings.

    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Salary Range

    $55,000- $65,000
