The Neuromuscular Division in the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Genetic Counselor to join a growing neurogenetics program with both clinical and research responsibilities. Research is the major focus of this position (60% effort), with responsibilities oriented around activities of the CReATe Consortium, an NIH-supported Rare Diseases Consortium focused on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) and related motor neuron disorders. Research responsibilities will include genetic counseling and assistance in the interpretation of next generation sequencing data. On the clinical front (40% effort), the Genetic Counselor will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team, primarily serving as a genetic resource for patients who have or are at risk for neuromuscular genetic disorders.
Research
- Acquire an in-depth understanding of the research program and the details of specific projects
- Assist with drafting and editing relevant sections of study protocols, informed consent documents and other study materials (e.g. informational brochures)
- Recruit and enroll study participants, coordinate study visits, and assist with collection of study data
- Provide counseling for research participants who may undergo genetic testing
- Assist with the interpretation of variants from next generation sequencing (on a research basis)
- Maintain accurate and complete source documents and case report forms; assist with data entry into research database
- Participate in patient/community outreach activities to help promote and sustain the research program
- Gather relevant medical history and pedigree information.
- Provide genetic counseling, education and psychological support for those with genetic neuromuscular disorders, or who may be at risk for such disorders.
- Facilitate patient decision making regarding genetic testing
- Assist with ordering and interpreting genetic test results, including next generation sequencing
- Manage commercial genetic testing
- Work in partnership with the neurologist and allied health professionals within the context of multi-disciplinary specialty clinics (e.g. Muscular Dystrophy Association, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, ALS), to manage care for patients with genetic neuromuscular disorders
- Participate in the training of neurology residents and fellows who rotate through the clinics
This position reports to principal investigator and Division Chief, Dr. Michael Benatar and Division Administrator.
Supervision Exercised:
Provide clinical supervision and evaluation of patient care related to specialty.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in relevant field. Preferred health professional who has received training from an accredited Genetic Counseling program
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
- Genetic Counselor License required in the State of Florida
- Board eligible or board certified with the American Board of Medical Genetics (or equivalent)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge or interest in neurogenetic conditions
- Specific knowledge of interest in neuromuscular diseases
- Experience with research and patient care
