THE POSITION
DEFINITION
To repair, service, and maintain a variety of firefighting tools, safety equipment, and other related fire department apparatus.

Three years of experience in mechanical repair and maintenance work.
PROOF OF EDUCATION
Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.
An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.
Special Qualifications
Driver License:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Certificate
Attain within the twelve-month probationary period a Mine Safety Appliance Certificate to service breathing apparatus.
Probationary Period
Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

DEFINITION
To repair, service, and maintain a variety of firefighting tools, safety equipment, and other related fire department apparatus.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Repair and service firefighting safety equipment including MSA (Mine Safety Appliance) masks and self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Repair a variety of firefighting equipment including fire hoses, hose couplings and nozzles, life belts, ladders, brackets, and numerous hand tools used in firefighting.
- Maintain stock and control of supply inventory including first aid and life support equipment, laundry, blankets, and similar items.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections using hand tools and testing equipment on hose pressure, minor electrical problems, and safety equipment.
- Perform minor repairs on the fire houses.
- Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, procedures, and tools used in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and minor leather craftwork.
- The types and sizes of welding rods, arc and gas welding procedures, and safety precautions.
- Hand and power tools used in the several crafts.
- Learn to repair and service a variety of tools, equipment, and safety apparatus used in the Fire Department.
- Use hand and power tools in carpentry, electrical, leather, plumbing, and welding work.
- Carry out work assignments with a minimum of supervision.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
- The operation of gas/arc welding equipment.

- Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. - Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
