Fire & Rescue Officer Trainee FY24-Q4

Position Purpose

This assignment is for the time that the employee is engaged in basic training at the Fire-Rescue Academy. It is a limited assignment designed to provide the training necessary to become a Fire and Rescue Officer. Included in this time is training for Emergency Medical Technician, a requirement for certification by the Texas State Commission on Fire Protection, as well as training in basic fire suppression. Employment in the Trainee Fire and Rescue Officer program should not exceed 18 months.

    • Statement of Service must include:
      • Dates of service
      • Anticipated separation date (must be no more than seven (7) months following application date)

Essential Functions

  • Attends formal courses to gain theoretical and practical knowledge in fire suppression and emergency medicine to include, but not limited to, Rules and Regulations, Communications, Fire Cause, Pump-Driver operator and methods and techniques of fire control and rescue operations.
  • Performs other related duties, including special projects as requested, or required.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants for trainee fire-rescue officer must:

  • be at least 18 years of age and not have reached 36 years of age on the date the civil service examination is given;
  • pass physical ability test approved by the civil service board;
  • have demonstrated safe driving habits and be qualified to drive a motor vehicle in Texas;
  • for any completed military service, a designation of honorable or uncharacterized discharge as indicated on separation documents provided by the military; and
  • meet one of the following qualifications:
  • have at least 45 semester hours college credit with a C average or better from an accredited college or university; OR must have completed at least four years active duty service in the Armed Forces of the United States of America, with an honorable discharge or uncharacterized discharge as indicated on separation documents provided by the military;

Additional Requirements

  • No felony convictions
  • No class A misdemeanor convictions within the last five (5) years
  • No class B misdemeanor convictions within the last two (2) years
  • No more than four (4) class C misdemeanor convictions within the last ten (10) years
  • Must not have committed or have been convicted of driving with a suspended license within the last twelve (12) months
  • Must not currently be on probation for DWI or other traffic offenses
  • Must not be on probation for any crime at the time of application
  • Must not be under criminal investigation during the application process
  • Must not have any outstanding traffic warrants or pending citations
  • Must possess the physical/medical health to adequately perform the duties of a Firefighter

ONLINE Exam Description

Exam covers basic math skills, reading comprehension, ability to read and interpret maps/Mapsco, industrial measurement and mechanical comprehension..

Time Limit: Three (3) hours.

Supplemental Information

The salary listed on the job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.

For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.

Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
