Field Services Engineer

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This position is located in the District 2 Office located in Mecklenburg County. The position will perform commercial and subdivision plan review for compliance with NCDOT standards. This includes reviewing the following: horizontal and vertical alignment, culvert sizing for 25 year storm, detention basins, spread and bypass analysis, roadway classifications, payment widths, right of way widths, typical sections, payment design, off site effects, material approved, effects of utilities, erosion control measures, flood plain areas, ADA requirements, guardrail design and location, congestion management issues, etc. Meet with developers and engineers to explain above requirements along with explaining any offsite improvements needed and work through plan revisions. Review subdivision plat maps prior to signature of District Engineer and recordation into public record. Perform other reviews of driveway plans, encroachment plans and petition to addition to the State Road System. Provide contract administration and inspection duties on purchase order, TIP and other contracts as needed. Prepare and assemble resurfacing contract data required for project letting. Assist in facilitating a complex construction phase coordination effort for multiple project schedules in an urban environment. Oversee the daily operations of technician staff.Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Computer experience including office software and drafting software Experience applying engineering concepts to solve basic engineering problems Knowledge of engineering standards, policies and procedures related to transportation Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups Experience writing memos, reports, and emails that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts Additional Expectations: Employee must have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering, including highway construction and maintenance methods and techniques. Must have the ability to read and interpret highway construction plans and analyze and solve difficult highway maintenance and construction problems. Must have the ability to communicate orally and in writing with DOT staff and employees, Governmental Officials, Private Engineers and Developers, and the general public. Experience with personnel management is preferred. Must have the ability to operate computer using Microsoft and SAP applications. Will be expected to legally operate a state vehicle. Employee will be subject to outside environmental conditions, noise and traffic hazards and will be required to traverse difficult and steep terrain.Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
