Position Description:

The Department of English seeks applications for a full-time faculty member to teach a variety of courses in the major, including a range of English courses, both lower- and upper-division. Vanguard seeks professionals of Christian faith who are committed to integration of faith and learning in their respective fields. The applicants must have demonstrated teaching ability and a commitment to working with and encouraging diversity.

Vanguard University offers both tenure track and term faculty contracts; the type of contract offered will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications at the time of hire. This position begins August 2024.

Will begin reviewing candidates on February 15, 2024 with a final deadline for applications on March 1, 2024.

Essential Functions:

  • Teaching English courses as scheduled. An overview of requirements for the English major can be found here: https://catalog.vanguard.edu/cas/undergraduate/english/english-ba/
  • Teaching 12 units per semester, including first-and-second-year Core courses in writing, critical thinking, and literature, and upper-division coursework in areas of expertise, including journalism, emerging media, and multicultural or comparative literatures.
  • Participating in general faculty roles including advising, mentoring, and committee service.
  • Collaborating with department faculty regarding curriculum implementation, student retention and support, and continuous program improvement.
  • Demonstrate ability to integrate faith and learning in the classroom.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A terminal degree in English is preferred. Candidates who are ABD are encouraged to apply. Candidates with Master’s Degree will be considered.
  • 3+ years’ undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Interpersonal, collaboration, and leadership skills. Ability to work independently.
  • Committed to continually working to improve culturally diverse perspectives and foster an inclusive environment.
  • Excellent professional writing, editing, and speaking skills.
  • A Christian faith and commitment to an integration of faith and learning.
  • Display a competence in integrating Christianity with English.
  • Teamwork, collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in publishing, journalism, the digital humanities, or related fields.
  • Background in serving as mentor or faculty support of a student publication.
  • Expertise in literature of the Global South (which includes Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East) OR expertise in multicultural literatures, preferably Chicano/a or Latin American literatures.
  • Experience working with multilingual student writers. Salary

Full-time position. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Assistant Professor: $58,242 to $78,336 Associate Professor: $67,932 to $91,494 Professor: $78,846 to $109,548

Placement at appropriate rank (e.g., Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) and initial salary is dependent upon education, experience, and based on Vanguard’s faculty compensation schedule. The upper range is reserved for candidates that demonstrate the highest level of proficiency within a particular rank. Vanguard University also offers a very competitive and generous benefits package.

Pastoral reference letter - Pastor or church leader.
