Job Summary

The Division of Academic Affairs is seeking an Executive Director of University Advising. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

Oregon State University ( OSU ) seeks a strategic leader to serve as Executive Director of University Advising. Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, this position is pivotal in driving the university’s commitment to student success. The Executive Director will provide dynamic university-wide leadership and direction for academic advising, establishing a cohesive and innovative framework that aligns with the university’s mission and values. In collaboration with college leadership, the Executive Director will spearhead the development and implementation of cutting-edge advising practices, while fostering a culture of excellence, equity, and inclusion within the advising community. With a strong emphasis on collaboration and partnership-building, the successful candidate will engage with key stakeholders across the institution to ensure that advising initiatives are seamlessly integrated and effectively support the diverse needs of OSU students.

Oregon State has a statewide presence with campuses in Corvallis and Bend, the OSU Portland Center and the Hatfield Marine Science Center on the Pacific Coast in Newport.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic leadership and vision setting (30%):

  • Provide strategic direction for university advising initiatives, articulating a bold vision for the future of advising at OSU that parallels the strategic goals of the institution.
  • Cultivate collaborative partnerships with academic colleges, departments, and student support services, serving as a liaison and advocate for advising needs at the university level.

Program development, implementation, and evaluation (30%):

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive advising program that ensures alignment with academic priorities and standards and fosters a student-centric approach.
  • Lead assessment efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of advising programs and services, utilizing data-driven insights to inform decision-making and enhance the quality of advising support for students.

Professional development (15%):

  • Establish a robust professional development framework for advising staff, providing opportunities for growth and skill enhancement that mirror executive-level standards.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion (10%):

  • Champion equity, diversity, and inclusion within the advising community, implementing initiatives to address systemic barriers and promote access and inclusivity in advising services.

Supervision (15%):

  • Supervise, mentor, and support university-level advising staff as well as dual reports from across the university.
  • The Executive Director of University Advising will provide leadership and oversight for the following positions:
    • Director of New Student Advising: Provide strategic guidance and supervision for the new student advising program, ensuring seamless transitions for incoming students. Provide strategic direction and guidance for the University Exploratory Studies program, ensuring comprehensive advising support for students exploring academic pathways.
    • Coordinator for Training and Professional Development: Spearhead training initiatives and professional development opportunities for advising staff, setting executive-level standards for skill enhancement.
    • Coordinator for Data Systems and Analytics: Oversee data systems and analytics related to advising, leveraging insights to drive strategic decision-making and enhance advising services.
What You Will Need

  • Earned Master’s degree (MS/MA/MEd) or professional degree in higher education administration, counseling, student affairs, or a related field.
  • Five years of experience in academic advising in a higher education setting, with demonstrated progression of experience.
  • Three years of supervisory experience of full-time staff.
  • Strong commitment to education and academic support.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders and to build strong rapport with university colleagues within and outside the advising community.
  • Experience leading initiatives.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Doctorate in Higher Education or a related field.
  • Knowledge of and experience in interpreting higher education academic policies and procedures.
  • Experience in developing and implementing initiatives within a higher education setting, including collaborating with university leadership to achieve common goals.
  • Experience with program evaluation and assessment.
  • Experience or leadership in a matrix or dual reporting environment.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Normal office working conditions with some travel required as necessary. Work will take place primarily on the Corvallis campus with some travel as needed to the Bend, Newport, and other OSU locations.

Recommended Full-Time Salary Range Salary is commensurate with skills, education and experience.
