See who Get It Recruit - Educational Services has hired for this role
Overview
The Women's ESL/Life Skills Program, established over a decade ago, addresses the English language and acculturation needs of low-income, predominantly Arabic-speaking women in San Francisco's Tenderloin district.
Supervised by the Arab Resident Services Coordinator, the program serves as a comprehensive resource for immigrant women, many of whom are mothers new to San Francisco, offering light case management and referrals for housing, childcare, education, immigration services, employment, and cultural integration. The ESL program provides tailored English and Life Skills training, structured schedules, and a supportive network to aid students in adapting to their new environment.
The program transitioned online from 2020 to 2022 due to circumstances, utilizing Zoom, Remind, and our YouTube Channel. Starting August 2022, an additional remote reading class complemented in-person sessions.
Ideal Candidate
We seek candidates comfortable in the Arabic-speaking/Muslim community, adept at teaching adult women with varying literacy levels and diverse needs. This position requires creativity, flexibility, excellent communication, and class management skills, along with a patient demeanor. Candidates should have a genuine interest in empowering women through lifelong learning, cultural integration, and community engagement. There is potential for assuming program management responsibilities alongside teaching.
Familiarity with community resources in the Tenderloin, SFUSD, San Francisco Public Library, and City College of San Francisco is advantageous.
Position Requirements
Education: An M.A. in TESOL/Applied Linguistics is preferred. Alternatively, candidates with a B.A./B.S. in English or Linguistics and a teaching credential in ESL from an accredited university will be considered. Online or TEFL certificates will not be considered.
Experience: Minimum 5 years teaching experience in adult ESL or immigrant family literacy in a multi-level classroom. Proficiency in curriculum planning and class management is essential. Familiarity with Zoom, Remind, Google Apps, and technology in general is required.
Desired Skills: Experience with low-literacy, low-income adult immigrants is highly desired. Knowledge of Arabic is beneficial, as is an understanding of Middle Eastern culture and customs.
Position Details
This is a part-time annual contractor position. Compensation is competitive with pay scale and based on education and experience. The candidate reports to the ESL Program Manager and collaborates closely with the Arab Resident Services Coordinator and advisory staff.
Schedule
Contact Hours: 6-8 hours per week, following the SFUSD Academic calendar. Classes meet Monday-Thursday.
Non-contact Hours: Additional 2-4 hours weekly, including a mandatory Friday morning staff meeting via Zoom and administrative duties such as prep, student communication, and grant reporting.
