Department Overview

Birch Aquarium at Scripps (aquarium.ucsd.edu) is a non-profit exploration center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The aquarium showcases over 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates. The interactive museum features research discoveries by Scripps scientists and engages visitors of all ages.

Location: 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Position Description

As an integral part of the Facilities crew at Birch Aquarium, the Sr. Custodian, under supervision, is responsible for the general cleanliness and upkeep of the interior of the building as well as the outdoor spaces. Duties include a combination of cleaning techniques including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, pressure washing, vacuuming, glass cleaning, metal polishing and trash removal. Day to day operations include maintaining the sanitation and supplies of all bathrooms in the building. Also, daily vacuuming and trash removal of exhibit spaces and offices. Other duties include cleaning and maintaining surfaces such as glass, acrylic, stainless steel and others. Participation in regular, periodical maintenance procedures and additional training. Also tasked with reporting repair and replacement needs to supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Six (6) months of experience performing cleaning in a custodial cleaning operation or large multi-facility environment.
  • Experience operating wet/dry vacuums, floor scrubbers, polishers, and carpet cleaners, and/or steam extractors to perform comprehensive floor care including, but not limited to: stripping, waxing and buffing hard and resilient floors as well as shampooing carpeted areas.
  • Experience with disinfection, sanitation and cleaning methods required of public restrooms, clinical laboratories, offices and dining areas
  • Basic computer skills to check email, enter time and material data and to complete electronic records.
  • Experience in securing a building, including responsibility of keys; familiarity with use of commercial door locks, panic hardware, and hold-open devices.
  • Solid communication skills to communicate verbally, electronically and in writing. Writing skills must be sufficient to complete a variety of forms and logs.
  • Experience implementing proper safety procedures for use of chemical, cleaners, solvents, and strippers. Knowledge of environmentally safe and sustainable cleaning methods and green products. Ability to provide input and make suggestions to improve work methods and products.
  • Must be flexible and able to effectively adjust to changing operational priorities requiring assignment of special projects and/or different area assignments as necessary. Ability to work independently and with diverse teams of people.
  • Customer service experience; work history demonstrates experience providing customer service and customer communication in a cleaning, housekeeping and/or general building maintenance environment.
  • Must be physically able to consistently perform job duties.
  • Ability to express information in spoken and written form.
  • Proven experience maintaining attendance record, being punctual, and meeting work deadlines.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must have ability to work safely and mindfully near sensitive live animals and their special habitats, tanks and life support equipment. Customer service skills are required for regular engagement with visitors, students and staff.
  • Flexibility in schedule is important. Day, Mid and Night shifts may be required as well as some holidays.
  • Must pass background check.
  • Must possess a valid CA drivers license to operate UCSD Vehicle(s).

Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required. Must meet CANRA compliance requirement per California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA," Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4).

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,653 - $50,550 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.47 - $24.21

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
