Pay: $28-$32/hr.

We are seeking an experienced, successful, and engaged Environmental Outreach Coordinator: Program Specialist to join our team. This position is expected to work out of our office at 2765 Lafayette St. in Santa Clara and limited job-related travel may be required.

Position Summary

GreenWaste of Palo Alto is currently seeking highly motivated, professional, self-directed, and enthusiastic candidates to fill the Environmental Outreach Coordinator (EOC) position. Candidates should have experience implementing public outreach and education programs, and possess a strong desire to expand waste prevention, reuse, and recycling programs. The Program Specialist will constantly strive to increase waste diversion across the commercial sector, as well as work to reduce recycling contamination across the community.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities

As a member of the Environmental Outreach team, contribute to the following efforts:

  • Identify the waste disposal and recycling needs of commercial businesses, multi-family complexes, and schools.
  • Conduct waste audits.
  • Conduct in-person waste sorting training with businesses and residents.
  • Provide all customers with appropriate educational information necessary to make informed, environmentally forward decisions relative to waste reduction, reuse, and recycling activities.
  • Report progress, challenges, and successes, including daily logs.
  • Respond to customer needs immediately and completely.
  • Help plan recycling and waste disposal needs for special events and large venues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

As The Program Specialist, Focus On The Following Efforts

  • Ensure commercial businesses comply with Palo Alto’s Recycling and Composting Ordinance.
  • Maintain detailed records related to enforcement protocols and audits.
  • Create innovative databases, maps, and processes to aid in the effective implementation of new programs, including the expanded Clean Up Day program and Deconstruction Ordinance.
  • Work closely with City of Palo Alto staff to ensure protocols are being followed.
  • Work closely with GreenWaste of Palo Alto’s Operations staff on all compliance measures and logistics.
  • Lead the implementation of outreach efforts relative to the City of Palo Alto’s new Deconstruction Ordinance.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and salesmanship.
  • Strong customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with implementation of a recycling and/or waste reduction program, or other environmental programs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, city planning, business or a related field.
  • One to three years of increasingly responsible experience related to the position.
  • A valid California driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Language Skill

  • Proficiency in English and/or Spanish

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to physically push, pull and lift objects up to 20lbs.
  • Prolonged standing or walking (events).

Work Environment

The typical work week is a Monday through Friday daytime schedule. Some early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required. Job-related travel is required, and a company vehicle will be provided.
