Environmental Health Safety Specialist

Job Overview:

Flint Group is currently seeking a Health, Safety, and Environmental Specialist with responsibilities for our Asheville, NC facility.

This mid-level professional position applies advanced safety and environmental compliance knowledge within the Asheville facility to all safety and environmental areas - personnel safety, process safety, and environmental in order to protect the health and safety of all company employees, as well as the surrounding communities and environments in which the company operates.

The successful candidate in this role:

  • Has a working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, PSM
  • Provides leadership, guidance and assistance in the prevention/control of accidents and incidents.
  • Collaborates & connects with employees and supervisors to identify and correct potential safety/health hazards and environmental issues.
  • Can present and communicate safety and environmental training material effectively to all levels of employees and management.
  • Can positively influence employees to comply with safety standards, can hold employees accountable, and has an impact on employees to ensure work is safely accomplished.
  • Assures compliance with organizational and government environmental, health and safety standards.
  • Demonstrates ability to organize HSE related records (both hard copies and electronic records including training records, compliance inspections, etc.).
  • Has the ability to manage time efficiently and maintain flexibility with regard to priorities as the business need changes.
  • Strive to be available to all employees (all shifts) on a regular basis.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with line management and site managers to ensure support is provided in achieving performance goals in health, safety and environmental and well as maintaining monthly updates on site performance (KPIs, EXP)
  • Provides training to new and current employees as well as contractors. Conducts safety meetings in conjunction with plant operations.
  • Support / Oversee safety committee & responders (and training of same)
  • Support ISO 14001 audits and compliance.
  • Coordinate incident & near miss investigations, reporting and facilitation of Root Cause Analysis.
  • Assist in the inspections as well as preparation and submittal of environmental reports as required by regulations and permits (air, storm water, etc)
  • Implements safe and environmentally compliant standard work practices with line personnel.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety performance/conditions, take proactive actions to implement, and see projects through to completion.
  • Assists in conducting assessments (JSAs), inspections & compliance audits of facilities
  • Monitor local OSHA (e.g. PSM), EPA (e.g. Title V), and DOT requirements and standards along with company policies and standards to ensure compliance.
  • Assists with industrial hygiene monitoring when needed as well as overseeing communication of IH results & annual hearing conservation activities
  • Maintain current revision of SDS for Raw Materials
  • Order and maintain safety supplies & response equipment/supplies
  • Oversee PSM related activities (i.e. committee minutes, MOCs, recordkeeping, CA’s assigned)
  • Daily walk-about through each area.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Experience.
  • 3+ years of safety or operations experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA, PSM and EPA regulations and policies.
  • Have a proficient working knowledge of computers and typical computer programs (i.e. Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
  • Must be able to climb ladders and steps, lift up to 50 lbs., and work at heights.
