English Learner Teacher, Grades K-8 (1.0)

The Public Schools of Brookline seeks enthusiastic and dedicated English Learner (EL) Teachers to join our team and support students in grades K-8 who are learning English as an additional language. We are looking for educators who are committed to providing high-quality language instruction, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, and promoting the academic success and language proficiency of English learners. Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Developing and implementing English language development (ELD) curriculum and instruction for EL students in grades K-8, integrating language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and content areas, aligned with state English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards and grade-level content standards.
  • Providing direct instruction and support in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, utilizing research-based instructional strategies, language acquisition methodologies, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers, content-area specialists, and support staff to co-plan and co-teach lessons, modify curriculum, and implement language supports and accommodations to ensure equitable access and participation in the general education curriculum.
  • Differentiating instruction to meet the diverse linguistic and academic needs of ELs, incorporating language supports, visuals, manipulatives, and real-world contexts to promote language acquisition and content comprehension.
  • Monitoring student progress, collecting language proficiency data, and using formative and summative assessments to measure growth, adjust instruction, and provide targeted interventions and supports to promote language development and academic success.
  • Administering state language proficiency assessments to identify student language proficiency needs.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues, communicating regularly to provide updates on student progress, sharing strategies for supporting student success, and collaborating on interventions and supports.
  • Fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued, respected, and supported in their academic and social-emotional growth, promoting a sense of belonging and self-confidence.
  • Actively participating in professional development opportunities, department meetings, and school-wide initiatives to continuously improve teaching practices and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
  • Performing other duties as directed by school and program leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working with English learners.
  • Knowledge about child and adolescent learning and the developmental needs of students.
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition theories, English language development frameworks, and best practices in ESL/ELL instruction.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and assess learning using a variety of methods.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Reflective practitioner with a growth mindset and a willingness to adapt to the evolving needs of students and the school community.
  • Massachusetts DESE teacher certification in English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • SEI endorsement
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Previous experience administering ACCESS for ELLs
  • Trained to administer the WIDA Screener
  • Previous experience working with EL students in a school setting
  • Solid knowledge of WIDA resources and grade-level content standards
  • Fluency in spoken and written Japanese and/or Korean

Reports To

The English Learner (EL) Teacher will report to the school building principal.
