Under the direction of the General Studies Department Chair, the ON-GROUND Full-Time Instructor of English & College Management will provide on-ground and online instruction for General Studies on the Knoxville campus. Assigned courses may include College Management, English Composition, English Composition with Research, and Critical Thinking. Additionally, this role will work in the South College Writing Lab to help students develop their writing skills across the curriculum. Instructors update course syllabi, develop lesson plans, develop presentation materials, and evaluate students’ progress. Instructors are required to ensure the safety and security of their classrooms and effectively use class time. This position will sit at the South College-Lonas Drive Campus in Knoxville, TN.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Develop instructional materials to facilitate student learning outcomes for the course.
  • Collect all assessment data related to student learning outcomes and support the General Education department in improvement initiatives for College Management, English, and Humanities courses.
  • Effectively use class time by ensuring meaningful learning activities occur for the entire class period.
  • Maintain an equitable system of student evaluation based on sound practices in accordance with the course syllabus.
  • Return all graded assignments in a reasonable time frame according to South College Faculty Expectations.
  • Support students with individualized outreach and attention in an effort to maximize engagement and success.
  • Make quick and accurate decisions regarding the assistance students need in Writing Lab tutoring sessions via face-to-face and online meetings, as well as through written feedback on emailed submissions.
  • Project an appropriate professional image.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Enforce all South College rules and policies.
  • Minimum of 40-hour work week, which includes on-campus office hours and face-to-face/on-ground classes.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience supporting first-year students and a strong understanding of a successful first-year experience.
  • Minimum of a master’s degree in English (doctorate preferred).
  • Must have at least 18 hours of graduate English credit.
  • Demonstrated experience tutoring in Writing Labs/Centers.
  • Prior teaching experience in an online and face-to-face environment.
  • Proficient in the written and oral communication of the English language.
