Position Overview

Advanced Energy provides independent engineering services for utility scale renewable energy resources connected to the transmission and distribution grids. We are seeking candidates who are passionate about ensuring the safety and reliability of renewable energy systems interconnected with the grid.

The ideal candidate will have an engineering background in the energy industry and knowledge about the electric power industry including transmission and distribution grids. This position will lead a team of engineers that provide consulting services and commissioning for renewable energy integration to the grid. The position requires a balance of technical knowledge, communications with the engineering staff, and collaboration with clients on service expansion.

Essential Functions

People Management

  • Perform supervisory responsibilities associated with the department. Might have direct and indirect reports and manage more than one team
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and the Director of Operations and Engineering in workforce planning, recruitment, and the hiring, onboarding, and terminations of positions
  • Manage the ongoing performance of staff through setting long and short-term goals, regular check-ins and annual performance development plan
  • Identify training and development opportunities applicable to role, career path and aligned with the organizational goals
  • Coach and mentor direct reports to reach their professional goals
  • Address and document any performance-related issues involving department members
  • In collaboration with HR, troubleshoot conflicts and issues that arise with team members
  • Provide recommendations to Director of Operations and Engineering regarding promotions and compensation adjustments for all members of the department
  • Create training plans and job expectations with 45 days and 90 days milestones for new employees
  • Ensure employee compliance with AE’s policies and procedures and promptly address concerns with employees and HR, as applicable

Operational Management

  • In collaboration with senior management, develop operational plans for the department and is accountable for effectively and efficiently executing operational objectives
  • Might provide recommendations for strategic direction of the department and broader function
  • Communicate objectives, opportunities, challenges and deliverables to department and management
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures relevant to work performed in the department
  • Evaluate work requirements and allocate staff based on available resources and the expertise needed for each of the projects
  • Coordinate periodic status meetings with department to meet team goals and deliverables
  • Determine need for training, resources, intervention, etc. and make appropriate requests
  • Recommend and assist with implementation of improvements to processes and procedures for department
  • Organize or participate in cross-functional meetings to collaborate on process changes and improvement

Financial Management

  • Provide recommendations for financial management of the team
  • Contribute to annual AE budget including matching projected revenues with staffing resources and expenses for department
  • Make decisions about the purchase of materials or services and approve expenditures
  • Analyze technology, resource needs, and market demand, to assess the feasibility of projects and make recommendations to senior management

Engineering and Project Delivery Support

  • Develop and maintain client relationships
  • Work in alignment with business development and marketing to promote business opportunities with both new and repeat clients
  • Ensure the department and the project teams adhere to project scope, timeline, and budget
  • Serve as a technical lead as needed to support team deliverables
  • Serve as responsible engineer for work products as needed
  • Create and conduct workshops and presentations for clients, stakeholders and staff
  • Develop and maintain own technical and professional knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
  • Keep up with innovative technologies being deployed relevant to work

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, 10+ years of engineering including 2 years of supervisory experience is required. Work experience preferably in the energy field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Five (5) years of experience in renewables, distributed energy resources or working with electric utilities
  • Professional Engineering license or the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license required
  • Knowledge of planning, design, interconnection, construction, and commissioning of utility scale renewable generation facilities including inverter-based resources (IBRs) and energy storage systems
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), IEEE recommended practices, IEEE 1547-2018 and IEEE 2800-2022; North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Guidelines and Standards
  • Familiarity with electric utility medium voltage distribution construction standards and practices
  • Familiarity with electric grid modeling at the distribution and/or transmission level
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Ability to manage team for results and development of staff
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in teams as well as independently
  • Effective problem solving, organization, time management, and attention to detail skillset
  • Intermediate skill level of Microsoft Office Products

Physical Demands/Work Conditions

In this role, the person will hold a valid NC driver’s license and travel 10-20% of the time to interface with customers. Some positions or projects could require more and occasionally for periods up to a week. The individual may frequently have to ascend and descend a ladder or crawl or kneel in small and contained spaces to perform inspections, collect data and/or detect errors. Must be able to work in industrial environments (plants and labs) or construction sites and follow company and/or customer safety protocols. Must be able to work in excessive hot or cold temperatures for short periods of time. Position could require exposure to the elements and wearing personal protective equipment.

This is an exempt position. There may be occasions where the hours of work may vary, be irregular, and be reasonably required to meet the goals of the organization.
