SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for working in partnership with the Clubhouse Program Director, other Clubhouse Staff and Clubhouse Members to achieve the goals of the Clubhouse community. As a member of the Clubhouse team, the successful candidate will assist the members in determining and achieving personal recovery goals, especially employment goals.

The Employment Coordinator performs most of their work within the context of the Employment and Education Unit, a clearly defined department of the clubhouse. The Employment and Education Unit consists of the Employment Coordinator and a number of members who have chosen to work on the team. The coordinator is encouraged to enlist team members to help them to complete their work and achieve the goals and deliverables identified in this job description.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned):

  • This position requires adopting and promoting the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs model of recovery.
  • The primary function of this position is to assist members in obtaining and maintaining employment consistent with their desires, interests and skills sets.
  • Work side-by-side with clubhouse members assisting them in identifying employment goals, developing individualized employment plans, drafting cover letters and resumes, practicing for interviews, using various search engines to apply for jobs and assisting them with making contact with employers. If needed, assist members in obtaining training and/or education that will help them secure employment. After a member has obtained employment, provide timely and flexible supports, on the job site or in the clubhouse, to help them maintain the job. Document activities, achievement of goals or other contract deliverables achieved by the employment team and provide to New Narrative, Inc. and Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation upon request.
  • Engage members in the work-ordered day to help them gain confidence, experience and skills that will help them obtain employment. This may include working side-by-side with members to provide modeling and encouragement.
  • Make face-to-face contact with community employers to develop job opportunities for NorthStar members. The goal of these contacts is to develop job opportunities that fall into both our Transitional and Supported Employment categories.
  • Successfully develop strong working relationships with the VRCs of the various Vocational Rehabilitation offices in the Tri-County area. Working in collaboration with these counselors, assist our members/their customers to attain the goals identified on the Individualized Employment Plans (IEPs) developed by the members and their counselors.
  • The Employment Coordinator will be expected to use a motor vehicle in order to successfully perform the responsibilities of this job.

Deliverables expected for this position:

All NorthStar members who are interested in employment must have Vocational Profiles, resumes and master applications completed and in their files. The Employment Coordinator will assist all job seekers in completing these documents as a major function of their job.

The Employment Coordinator will engage at least two job-seeking members per month in a work-ordered day volunteer role in which the members work at least two hours per day, at least two days per week. This role must be consistent with their employment goal and must assist them in preparing for the type of job they are seeking in the community. The Employment Coordinator will monitor members’ performance in the volunteer roles selected by members.

The successful candidate will establish at least one strong working relationship with a local VRC per quarter.

The successful candidate will make at least three presentations to community employers per month. At least one of these presentations will result in the development of a Transitional Employment position for the clubhouse per quarter.

Work Ordered Day:

Assist the Program Director to ensure that there is an adequate amount and variety of meaningful work in the clubhouse to make it possible to engage members in this work for between four and six hours per day. Encourage members to participate in the full work ordered day, taking into account their interests and stamina. Please note that in this position, you do not complete the task for a member but work in partnership to complete the tasks of the units.

Assist with data collection and information technology management efforts:

At the request of the Program Director, obtain financial and clubhouse related data. Organize the information using Microsoft Office and Excel to ensure data can be retrieved in a timely manner. Assist in organizing physical and electronic clubhouse records. All of these tasks should be completed with the assistance of member(s).

Assist with Transitional Employment Placement (TEP) opportunities for members:

All staff will have Transitional Employment (TE) management responsibility and will be responsible for “covering” Transitional Employment when the member employee is not able to report for his/her placement. The Employment Coordinator will assign management responsibility and coordinate the coverage of all NorthStar Clubhouse TE placements. Provide opportunities for TEP regardless of success or failure in previous placements.

Computer/Typing Skills:

Must be able to type 35 correct WPM and be familiar with the Microsoft environment.

Reports to work as scheduled and on time.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Work Schedule:

The work schedule requires flexibility to meet the needs of the Clubhouse Community. The normal work schedule is Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Rotation to cover Clubhouse activities on evenings, weekends and holidays is required. Clubhouse International Standards require clubhouses to be open on all holidays.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have an understanding and commitment to the Clubhouse International Model of psychiatric rehabilitation and the underlying values and principles. Experience in not-for-profit and/or human service organizations preferred.

Education and/or Experience:

At least 1-2 years of experience with people living with mental illness (any combination of work, volunteer, or lived experience accepted).

Bachelor's degree in a human service related field from an accredited college or university preferred.

Experience in helping disadvantaged and/or disabled individuals obtain and maintain employment preferred.

Job Development Experience Preferred.

Experience in marketing and/or sales preferred.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and government regulations. Ability to write various types of reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or colleagues, staff, members, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills/Computer Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute ratio, rate and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Experience with Microsoft software and ability to utilize a computer to track member participation.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, think critically, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Eligibility for QMHA and/or Peer Support Specialist Certification preferred.

Valid Oregon Driver's License and current insurance/acceptable driving record.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, use hands, fingers, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally asked to lift and/or move up to 30lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
