JOB TITLE: Elementary School Principal

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

PAY GRADE: 7

DEPT./SCHOOL: Assigned Campus

Residency Requirement

District residency will be a consideration in the selection process.

Primary Purpose

Direct and manage the instructional program and supervise operations at the intermediate or elementary school level. Provide instructional leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service. Direct the implementation of district policies and instructional programs and manage the operation of all campus activities.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Master's degree in educational administration

Texas mid-management or other appropriate Texas certificate

Certified instructional supervisor and appraiser in Professional Development Appraisal System

Special Knowledge/Skills

Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Experience

Two years experience as a classroom teacher

Two years experience in instructional leadership roles

Major Responsibilities And Duties

Instructional Management

  • Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities are related to program outcomes and use these findings for corrective action and improvement.
  • Regularly consult with the campus-level committee in the planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the campus instructional program; include students and community representatives when appropriate.
  • Analyze results of testing program at each grade level to identify and correct areas of instruction as needed.

School or Organization Morale

  • Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.
  • Foster collegiality and team building among staff; encourage their active involvement in the decision making process.
  • Provide for two-way communication with superintendent, staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Communicate and promote high performance expectations for staff and students; recognize excellence and achievement.
  • Facilitate effective and timely resolution of conflicts.

School or Organization Improvement

  • Build a common vision with staff for school improvement; direct planning activities and put programs in place with staff to ensure attainment of school's mission.
  • Identify, analyze, and apply research findings (e.g., effective school correlates) to facilitate school improvement.
  • Develop and set annual campus performance objectives for each of the academic excellence indicators utilizing the campus planning process and site-based decision making committee.
  • Develop, maintain, and use information systems and records necessary for attainment of campus performance objectives addressing each academic excellence indicator.

Personnel Management

  • Interview, select, and orient new staff and approve all personnel assigned to the campus.
  • Define expectations for staff performance regarding instructional strategies, classroom management, and communication with the public.
  • Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences with all staff.
  • Assign and promote all personnel assigned to the campus.
  • Make recommendations to the superintendent on the termination, suspension, or non-renewal of employees assigned to the campus.
  • Work with the campus-level planning and decision making committee to plan staff development activities.
  • Confer with subordinates regarding their professional growth; work with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.

Management of Administrative, Fiscal, and Facilities Functions

  • Comply with district policies as well as state and federal laws and regulations affecting schools.
  • Develop campus budgets based on documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs; implement programs within budget limits; maintain fiscal control; accurately report fiscal information.
  • Articulate campus needs to superintendent and board of trustees.
  • Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other

documents required including accurate and timely reporting of maximum attendance for the purpose of textbook requisitions.

  • Manage the use of school facilities; supervise maintenance of facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe campus.

Student Management

  • With faculty and students to develop and implement a student-management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the Student Handbook.
  • Conduct conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning school and student issues.
  • Work cooperatively with teachers and counselors, review children=s academic and behavior records to assure that all students are placed in appropriate educational programs.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible; serve as a role model for all campus staff.

School or Community Relations

  • Articulate the school's mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of school and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise and evaluate the performance of teachers, counselors, librarians, instructional aides, clerical support staff, and custodians.
