An elementary assistant principal assists the principal in providing leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of an elementary school in order to promote the educational development and achievement of students in accordance with the Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law. The assistant principal provides leadership in the program development and improvement, as well as professional staff development.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience
Elementary experience, preferred
Current and past leadership positions including but not limited to Lighthouse Coordinator, Leader In Me (LIM) action team member, ILT, CAT/CLT, mentor, administrative experience (e.g. principal, assistant principal, SBSS); preferred
Demonstrated excellence in communication, both oral and written
Positive work record, which includes a high degree of organization
Demonstrated excellence in maintaining effective relationships with students, staff, and colleagues
Proficient technology skills
Education Qualifications
Master’s degree in Education, Education Administration or related field
Licensure
Iowa Professional Administrative license, by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE)
Essential Functions
Builds and maintains positive and effective relations with students, parents and community groups; Interprets the goals, objectives, and programs of the school to parents and the community.
Fosters an environment where students, staff and faculty work cooperatively together.
Confers with students, parents and staff to discuss attendance, social, emotional, behavior, and academics needs.
Develops and maintains an effective level of communication with appropriate personnel.
Assists in the preparation of schedules and assignments for staff and students.
Manages organizational systems and resources for a safe, high-performing learning environment.
Assist the principal in coordinating the work of school staff and school district program leaders to develop and implement instructional programs and teaching practices.
Assist the principal in ensuring district curriculum, instructional models, and assessments are implemented with fidelity.
Provides coherent support services and accommodations to meet the needs of students.
Interprets Board of Education and central office policies and procedures to students, staff, and families.
Coordinates special activities, field trips, programs, and building utilization.
Regularly inspects facilities and brings maintenance and cleaning problems to the attention of the head custodian.
Assists the principal in upholding, developing and maintaining the student’s handbooks.
Other Functions
Collaborate with internal and external personnel (e.g. other administrators, district staff, public agencies, community members, etc.) for implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.
Facilitate meetings, workshops, professional development and trainings, etc. (e.g. regulatory requirements, community or outside agencies, interdepartmental needs, etc.) for identifying issues, developing recommendations, supporting other staff, and serving as a District representative.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; evaluating employee performance, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
Facilitates and oversees committee meetings, as assigned by the principal.
Coordinate and supervise after-school events, activities, conferences and meetings.
Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
Works well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with school personnel and works well with other custodians on jobs that require more than one person.
Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to
District operations.

Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units; directing the use of budgeted funds within a work unit; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions.
