Miller-Driscoll School (grades PK-2) is seeking a .6 FTE assistant principal

TITLE: ELEMENTARY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL (PK-2)

Certification/Required Qualifications

  • Eligible for State certification as an intermediate school administrator 092
  • At least five years of successful experience as a classroom teacher
  • Documented evidence of past superior job performance in leadership capacity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with and demonstrated understanding of the needs of students in an elementary learning environment
  • Experience teaching and/or leading at the elementary level
  • Demonstrated experience with technological approaches to enhancing learning, scheduling, grading and student recordkeeping
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience identifying and using best practices for instruction, staff performance appraisal, and student management
  • Such additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable

REPORTS TO: School principal

SUPERVISES: Select certified and non-certified staff members as determined on an annual basis

Job Goal

To lead a team of faculty and staff to provide the best education for students through staff and curriculum development, home/school communication and collaboration, and an environment both conducive to learning and responsive to the needs of the entire school community. Working with groups of students, staff, parents, and district administrators, the assistant principal guides others in setting the foundation to actualize the Portrait of the Graduate and the vision and mission of the Wilton Public Schools.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Assist the principal in the general administration of the school: screening, interviewing, and recommending personnel; compiling annual budget requests; preparing teacher and student handbooks; planning and coordinating with the principal; and all activities related to school opening and closing. Serve as principal in absence of principal.
  • In consultation with the principal, establish annual goals for the school on a clearly defined priority basis, prepare strategies for achieving these goals, and develop criteria for evaluating the attainment of the goals.
  • Work collaboratively with school and district administrative teams to insure successful implementation of school and district mission and strategic plan goals.
  • Work with instructional leaders in assessing student learning needs and assist in developing programs designed to meet those needs.
  • Meet with teachers to study common problems, reduce conflict situations, and provide guidance.
  • Supervise student behavior, oversee disciplinary procedures, record disciplinary action, and monitor student attendance. Communicate appropriately and professionally with parents in all of these matters.
  • Assist in staff development programming for teachers and instructional leaders.
  • Evaluate tenured and non-tenured teaching staff and classified staff in compliance with the Wilton Public Schools Staff Appraisal Plan.
  • Serve as a member of the District Leadership Team.
  • Demonstrate leadership in school committees and activities.
  • Work with Instructional Leaders, counselors, planning and placement teams, and special services staff in assessing student learning needs and assist in developing programs and/or courses designed to meet those needs.
  • Attend and lead PPT and 504 meetings per statutory guidelines and requirements as assigned.
  • Support SRBI program and strategies to support student learning.
  • Cooperate in conducting safety inspections and safety drill activities; liaise with appropriate fire and police personnel.
  • Develop duty assignments for professional staff. Supervise and evaluate classified staff (secretaries, nurse, paraprofessionals) to monitor effectiveness, workload, and assignments.
  • Prepare schedules for classes and modified day activities.
  • Coordinate and supervise interns and student teacher placement and programs.
  • Assume responsibility for coordinating transportation and custodial and cafeteria services as appropriate.
  • Monitor building/physical plant and maintenance needs; coordinate maintenance priorities with supervisor, custodial and maintenance services.
  • Establish and maintain favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and program.
  • Keep informed on current trends, practices, and research in elementary education by advanced study, by visiting school systems, by attending conferences, and by other appropriate means.
  • Coordinate and supervise extracurricular and evening school activities as assigned or requested.
  • Implement Board policies and regulations and school goals and performance responsibilities in order to insure that all the students for whom he/she is responsible are provided every opportunity to reach their full potential.
  • Accept additional assignments in the role of assistant principal as directed by the principal.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve months a year (261 days) at a salary determined by the Board.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Normal office physical demands; ability to be present throughout the physical plant of the school throughout the day; ability to travel to all school sites throughout the district as needed.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the building Principal in accordance with the provisions of Board policy on evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
