Independently performs a variety of assignments requiring the application of standard design engineering techniques for a small project or selected segments of a larger project to design and engineer building electrical power distribution, lighting, building life safety, emergency UPS, security, paging and low voltage voice and data systems to assure safe reliable and energy efficient operation. This requires the application of standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria where the scope is already outlined in the form of contract drawings, specifications, one-line drawings and component estimates. The incumbent must be capable of exercising independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to make minor design adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.

Requirements

  • Normally requires a 4-year electrical engineering degree
  • 3 - 5 years’ related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience).
  • Considerable experience in utilizing various computer software packages such as AutoCAD, Coordination Study and Arc Fault Study Calculations.
  • Up to 20% travel may be required.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to walk job sites which would include the ability to clime stairs and navigate construction sites.

  • Prepares working drawings and performs detailed calculations for a small project or a detailed segment of a larger project ensuring they are within schedule and budget for the project.
  • Prepares technical reports for review and approval and prepares Step 1 reports for establishing the design criteria of a project.
  • Visits sites for rehabilitation projects.
  • Responsible for the selection of equipment to be used to satisfy the scope of the project.
  • Evaluates vendors’ bids and drawings to assure compliance with specifications and requirements of the project. Reviews subcontractor’s quotes for additional authorized work.
  • Reviews and approves design drawings of other employees or offices for an assigned segment of a project.
  • Takes a lead role in working with other disciplines to ensure there are no conflicts or interferences between designed systems.
  • Coordinates with field personnel and contractors to resolve problems that arise during construction and frequently inspects construction projects for compliance with the engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Communicate appropriate information on project status, scope changes and problem areas to chief electrical engineer.
  • Maintain current knowledge of National Electrical Codes as well as design and construction procedures to meet changing priorities.
  • File calculations in a complete and orderly manner for future reference.
