Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a creative and accomplished editor to direct coverage of American education.

We’re looking for an editor who can guide big news stories and handle pieces that capture the extraordinary story of American education at a crossroads – over free speech, learning loss from the pandemic, affordability and access, and political forces from all directions.

We’re looking for someone with experience leading reporters through major news moments—both with breaking news coverage and with stories off the news that explain complex ideas and illuminate larger themes. You will report to the National Editor.

Responsibilities


  • You will help reporters produce revelatory work that gives readers new insights.
  • You will guide big news stories and direct coverage of American education, both K-12 and higher education.
  • Demonstrates support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.


Basic Qualifications


  • 10+ years’ experience a journalism or media company or other relevant organization
  • Editing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment
  • Digital skills that show a willingness to experiment and try new ways to connect with readers

  • Experience promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $154,000.00 and $176,000.00.
