Overview 

The Global News Service (GNS) is seeking an editor with English- and Mandarin-language skills to curate, edit and publish China-related news content created by the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) entities and its news partners for GNS’s English-language website and related platforms. The ideal candidate will be based in Washington, D.C. however, we are open to considering exceptional candidates residing anywhere within the United States who are able to effectively perform the duties of the role remotely. 

 

The Global News Service provides news content to audiences and partners around the world who are subject to information manipulation from malign international sources, promoting responsible journalism and fostering well-informed public discourse free of bias. One of GNS’s primary goals is to amplify and distribute factual, reliable, uncensored and free news content on a singular global platform. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Use sound editorial judgment to help select China-related stories from USAGM entities (including Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Middle East Broadcasting Networks and Office of Cuba Broadcasting) and other potential news partners that will enable GNS to stand out as the leading China-focused media outlet.  
  • Help develop coverage plans to support the mission of GNS. 
  • Edit English content, which has been translated from Chinese, at a consistently high standard for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and flow, under occasionally intense time pressure.  
  • Create news packages, using this curated and edited content, to be disseminated to USAGM entities and news partners around the world. 
  • Publish content on the GNS website and associated platforms in a timely manner. 
  • Use sound editorial judgment to support visual storytelling. 
  • Display and pursue a deepening understanding of current events covered by GNS. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 


Qualifications 

  • Minimum 5 years journalism experience, either in professional newsroom or as freelancer; digital journalism experience is strongly preferred.  
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in the field of journalism, translation, literature, or other related subjects. 
  • Mastery of written English with ability to convert rough translations to polished English while maintaining accuracy and meaning of original work. 
  • Proficiency in Mandarin is required. Knowledge about China related reporting is strongly preferred. 
  • Experience with publishing content online and to a variety of social media platforms. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work effectively with diverse cultures and personalities. 
  • Excellent attention to detail with ability to reliably produce grammatically correct and typo-free work. 
  • Proven record of integrity and ethical decision-making in a journalism setting.
