Division Manager

Job Description Summary

Within a Division Hauling & collections unit, the Division Manager – responsible for planning, organizing and managing the collections activities for commercial, industrial, and residential customers, as well as container delivery and pick up, in a geographically dispersed area. The position manages a team that could consists of the following roles: Operations Manager, Operations Supervisors, Route Supervisors, Dispatchers, Operations Clerks, Drivers, and Helpers who are responsible for the route systems in all lines of business throughout the division. The Division Manager works with his or her General Manager, and other managers in the business unit, to execute a local market area strategy that complements the company’s overall strategic operating and marketing plans and implements tactical initiatives to drive functional excellence and budget achievement. The Division Manager oversees all matters related to collections operations, effective safety and accident prevention programs, compliance with standards and drives change management initiatives that contribute to the growth and durability of the division.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supervises and manages daily activities for collections and staff, including hiring, training, coaching, performance management; develop supervisory goals and objectives; and effective resolution of safety issues and claims.
  • Plans, develops, initiates, and evaluates division priorities, goals, long range objectives and internal operating procedures pertaining to management of waste collection; establishes and implements management systems and ensures completion of assigned goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for effective supervision and administration including assisting with budget preparation, monitoring expenditures & revenue collection, recruitment and retention, staff development and training, succession planning, performance management, employee relations, staff discipline and recognition.
  • Implement and execute plans to complement the district’s strategic and operating plan; champion the execution of tactical initiatives within the district to maximize customer experience, growth, and durability, while optimizing profitability.
  • Ensure maximum productivity through route management systems for commercial, roll-off and residential routes and establish productivity goals where needed; ensure adherence to operating standards; and manage labor hours and disposal expenses.
  • Interact with customers and local, state, and federal government employees to resolve customer service concerns; ensure regulatory compliance standards are met.
  • Oversee effective safety and accident prevention programs to ensure all reasonable action are taken to prevent accidents and injuries; ensure a safe and productive work environment for all employees; implement and maintain and effective loss control and safety program.
  • Lead operations to ensure compliance with all standards including environmental, operating, regulatory, safety, accounting, and ethics.
  • Monitors and redesigns collections routes as needed.
  • Coordinates public relations and community outreach on matters related to solid waste.
  • Promote an effective safety program that seeks to prevent accidents, avoid injuries, and recognize safe employees. Enforces safety regulations, coordinates weekly safety meetings, and ensures safety precautions are followed by employees.
  • Oversee and or conduct daily crew-out safety tailgate meetings and driver launch
  • Oversee and or conduct daily/weekly safety lane inspections.
  • Approve expenses and along with General Manage, manage budget for the division including approval of purchase orders and vendor pricing.
  • Develop a best-in-class team and workplace culture and effectively manage performance and talent development; drive best-practice sharing.
  • Build and maintain strong and effective relations with relevant government, community, and environmental groups.
  • Remains abreast of best practices, legislative, regulatory and policy development that affects solid waste operations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as needed or assigned.

Qualifications, Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of 4 years of supervisory or management experience and/or proven experience in similar role
  • Preferred - Bachelor’s degree in Business.
  • Preferred – Class A or B CDL holder.

Work Environment

  • The work environment for this position is in a typical office but, requires outdoor activity as well which includes all weather-related situations
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high stress environment with stringent monthly deadlines, quotas, and goals
