The Director, Strategic Finance will have an opportunity to influence BL's strategy and lead the implementation of cross-functional projects that drive strategic investment, operational efficiency, and financial performance while deepening our impact on educators and students.

Reporting To The VP, Finance And Supporting The Executive Leadership Team, The Director, Strategic Finance Will Help BetterLesson Achieve Our Ambitious Vision By Leading Mission-critical Efforts, Including

  • Financial Forecasting: Managing BL's forecasting efforts, including owning our financial model and collaborating with cross-functional leaders to build scalable and reliable revenue forecasting processes
  • Strategic Analysis: Leading strategic analyses in support of BL's Product and Go-to-Market strategies, including pricing, profitability by service/customer, customer acquisition costs by sales channel, customer lifetime value, etc.
  • Executive Engagement: Serving as the primary business partner for members of the Executive Leadership Team as they build hiring plans, budgets, and finance-related KPIs
  • Board/Investor Relations: Preparing financial forecasts and scenario planning for quarterly Board Meetings and other investor engagement efforts

Here are some things you can expect to accomplish in this role:

  • Leads company-wide financial forecasting efforts, including:
    • Building and maintaining BL's financial forecasting model incorporating budget/bookings/revenue targets, including monthly updates to compare performance with forecast.
    • Collaborating with Product Operations and Go-to-Market leaders to build scalable, reliable processes for revenue forecasting.
    • Preparing financial forecasts and scenario planning in preparation for quarterly Board meetings
  • Analyzes financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improving the financial positioning of BL. Provides financial insights in support of BL's Product and Go-to-Market strategies (i.e. pricing, profitability, gross margins by service/account/product, customer acquisition costs by channel, customer lifetime value, and other key performance indicators related to company strategy).
  • Collaborates with the Product Operations team to drive improvements in financial processes, systems, and reporting capabilities to promote efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability in alignment with BL's broader business intelligence initiatives (e.g., building systems to provide visibility into key company goals, financial performance, etc.).
  • Leads due diligence processes and related initiatives to support fundraising efforts, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), debt financing, or other engagement with the capital markets.
  • Leads annual budgeting process with ELT members to set company and departmental budget targets, including:
    • Analyzing monthly budget variance analysis at the company and team levels, which are prepared by the Accounting team
    • Reviewing findings from budget variance analysis with ELT members to adjust expenses/investments throughout the year
    • Working with BL ELT members to define hiring triggers and annual headcount plans
About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
  • 5 or more years of experience in roles focused on strategic finance / FP&A, strategy consulting, or private equity with exposure to tech-enabled services businesses.
  • Expert knowledge of financial modeling, frameworks, tenets, and best practices.
  • Proficient knowledge of business management systems (i.e., NetSuite), business intelligence software systems (i.e. Tableau), and customer relationship management systems (i.e. Salesforce), and related financial software applications (e.g., expense management, enterprise resource planning, etc.)
  • Proficient knowledge of the K-12 educational industry.
