Director of Young Adult Ministry

General Introduction

The Archbishop, visible principle of unity in his archdiocese, is called to build up the particular Church unceasingly in the communion of all its members, and to ensure that their diverse gifts and ministries, in union with the universal Church, serve to build up all the faithful and to spread the Gospel. (Apostolorum Successores 8).  He must take care that all the affairs which belong to the administration of the whole archdiocese are duly coordinated and are ordered to attain more suitably the good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him.” (Apostolorum Successores 177).

Each position employed in the Chancery helps to extend the ministry of the Archbishop in particular ways as outlined in the position description.

NOTE:  This is an appointed position by the Ordinary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle and subject to Archdiocesan Policy pertaining to appointed positions.  The supervisor of this position reserves the right to make necessary modifications to this position to reflect current and appropriate responsibilities.

General Summary Of Essential Purpose

The Director of Young Adult Ministry supports the work of the Office of Faith Formation, Human Development, and Pastoral Ministries by working collaboratively with team members, parishes, and other identified groups to facilitate young adults to grow in their relationship with Jesus and engage as missionary disciples in Catholic parishes. Additionally, the Director of Young Adult Ministry ensures all Archdiocesan youth ministry efforts extend the mission and vision of the Church as communicated by the Archbishop.

Essential Position Duties

  • Collaboratively works with supervisor, coworkers, parish ministers and volunteers to identify and implement the most effective methods to foster young adult engagement in parishes as evidenced by sacramental participation, understanding of the faith and stewardship of time, talent and treasure. Supports parish ministers and volunteers as they engage young adults in parish life.
  • Collaborates with other Chancery offices and parish ministers, to lead Archdiocesan programing to foster, among young adults, a relationship with Christ expressed through understanding of the faith, sacramental participation, Christian living, and prayer. This includes but is not limited to events and programs such as young adult formation, retreats, mission opportunities, and annual events, for example the Holy Thursday Pilgrimage and the New to Seattle Mass.
  • Supports pastoral leadership in the formation and ongoing support of young adult ministry staff and volunteers. This includes ensuring knowledge of and compliance with Archdiocesan and safety policies and best practices in ministry.
  • Leads efforts to form and develop the spiritual maturity of young adults, preparing them to discern their vocation. These efforts will include formation in an understanding of stewardship and practical guidance in how practices of faith can help them to act as leaders in family, business, parish and society.
  • Collaborates with the offices of Hispanic Ministry, Multicultural Ministry, and Youth Ministry Services to engage and integrate young adults from the multicultural communities and provide support, training and resources to all serving young adults in these communities.
  • Develops and implements leadership development initiatives to support young adults (18-39) as they incorporate their faith into their work, family, and the greater society.
  • Directs Archdiocesan efforts to support and collaborate with campus ministry and Newman centers. This includes serving as a resource to the directors of the ministry, collaborating on programs and other initiatives, and serving as a mentor to the Eastside Newman peer minister
  • Ensures the maintenance of accurate and useful data enabling the Archdiocese to maintain contact with young adults in order for the Archdiocese to continue supporting the processes of evangelization, formation and engagement in discipleship. Manages budgets and administrative matters related to young adult and campus ministry.
  • Manages the social media presence of Western Washington Catholic Young Adults and Pastoral Juvenil Hispana to reach and engage young adults.

Essential Qualifications

Primary: 

  • Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop.
  • Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers.
  • Be a practicing Catholic, completely faithful to the Church and the Magisterium and have a strong and disciplined prayer life.
  • Possess a heart for the New Evangelization.

Education

  • Masters degree in Theology, Religious Study, Youth Ministry or other related field preferred. 
  • Bachelor’s degree required. 

Experience

  • Demonstrated successful leadership/management experience to include staff supervision, program management and budget management.
  • Demonstrated ability to evangelize and communicate the faith.
  • Knowledge of and experience in retreats, event planning and leadership development for youth preferred.
  • Ability to work with people with varying ecclesial, economic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience in supporting committees and leadership groups preferred.

Other Elements

  • Excellent communications skills both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and PowerPoint. 
  • Demonstrated competency in digital communications tools.
  • Strong demonstrated competence in interpersonal and public relations skills including the ability to work collaboratively with Chancery staff, school personnel, pastors and parish ministers.
  • Ability to work on evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to provide own transportation, must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.

Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
