Berkley Industrial Comp, a member of W.R. Berkley Corporation, is seeking a dynamic individual charged with course setting and providing leadership and resources to a talented underwriting team.
The Director of Underwriting will also contribute to business planning, forecasting, expense management, and provide leadership in insurance industry affairs. In addition to achieving defined financial objectives, the expectation is to support the objectives of all other disciplines at Berkley Industrial Comp, exhibiting a collaborative and team-oriented approach.

Additional Requirements
The role will involve periodic overnight travel in support of Berkley Industrial Comp’s underwriting efforts. Primary travel locations include Kentucky, Alabama, Nevada, and Arizona. Depending on candidate location, 30% travel is anticipated with this role.

The Director of Underwriting will also contribute to business planning, forecasting, expense management, and provide leadership in insurance industry affairs. In addition to achieving defined financial objectives, the expectation is to support the objectives of all other disciplines at Berkley Industrial Comp, exhibiting a collaborative and team-oriented approach.
Key Functions Include But Are Not Limited To
- Supports, coaches and motivates underwriting staff to achieve business and individual goals.
- Ensures effective underwriting discipline to achieve planned financial objectives.
- Collaborates with all Berkley Industrial Comp departments to achieve organization-wide goals.
- Maintains technical underwriting best practices and controls that support professional underwriting performance.
- Assists the VP, Chief Underwriting Officer with projects as requested.
- Assists with budgeting and annual companywide initiatives/goals.
- Responsible for all profit and loss within an assigned group of accounts.
- Approves new and renewal risks that exceed authorities of Territorial Underwriters.
- Collaborates with VP Business Development in agency development, evaluations and goal setting.
- May be responsible for underwriting a small book of larger premium accounts.
- Understanding of State Coverage and Proof of Coverages.
- Regulatory and Compliance Function Activities.
- Lead Role for Policy Center (Policy Administration System) taking the lead role with both Training and Testing Lead.
- Development and maintenance of policies and procedures within the department.
- Bachelor’s degree
- CPCU and/or CIC strongly desired
- 10-15 years of experience underwriting workers compensation and higher hazard industry experience; strong relationships within the industry at carrier and agency levels
- Demonstrated leadership skills: decision making, leading and development of direct reports
- Exceptional mentoring skills, “teacher’s heart”. Strong coaching qualities to serve as valued resource for current and new team members
- Advanced skill set with data analytic tools (Power BI, Excel, Tableau)
- Front-line working knowledge of the national workers compensation marketplace (major brokers, NCCI and independent bureaus, state peculiarities)
- Supportive of and actively pursuing continuing education opportunities
- Team oriented, collaborative mindset with competitive personality
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
