The Role And Responsibilities

Under the direction of and reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Services, the Director of Student Life, Leadership and Belonging will coordinate and develop programs that address law students’ development, growth, and leadership, and foster diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. Among other responsibilities, this position will oversee and develop leadership programming for student organizations, coordinate co-curricular professional identity formation programming, and implement programs that promote diversity and inclusion on campus on behalf of the Office of Student Services, including efforts to support first-generation law students.

The Office of Student Services works together as a team to implement events and programs that support student life at UC Law SF. We are looking for someone who will work collaboratively with staff members in the office and cross-departmentally on existing programming and events, but who will also take primary responsibility for coordinating community engagement efforts on campus and for overseeing and managing the student organizations on campus. We are also looking for someone with strong emotional intelligence and a deep sense of compassion to support and guide our diverse student body.

Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducts outreach to, serves as the primary liaison for, and works collaboratively and closely with UC Law SF student government body (UCLAS) and all student organizations.
  • Provides comprehensive oversight and support for all student organizations, including managing the registration process, coordinating events and activities, and trainings for UC Law SF student leaders.
  • Develops programming and resources designed to help law students thrive in a professional environment.
  • Develops programming and resources designed to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus and to support our diverse student body.
  • Serves as a liaison to other College staff and faculty on matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues on behalf of students.
  • Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Student Services, leads JD Orientation, including developing DEI programming for Orientation.
  • Collaborates with various UC Law SF departments, including the Career Development Office, the Office of the Registrar, the Office for Academic Skills Instruction & Support, and the Center for Social Justice.
  • Works with the Student Services team to coordinate and/or lead a number of long-standing large-scale and small-scale events such as commencement, student leadership awards, coffee for the bar, and coffee for finals.
  • Maintains weekly advising hours to provide individualized academic advising to students, including graduation requirements and course planning, opportunities for 2L and 3L, and support resources.
  • Maintains weekly advising hours for student organization matters, general counseling, and receiving complaints and concerns related to on-campus diversity, equity, and inclusion issues.
  • Serves as co-deputy director of the Office of Student Services if the Assistant Dean of Student Services is unavailable.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Student Services.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Successful examination of a state bar (CA or NY preferred and admission to practice preferred).
  • Minimum of three years working with students and/or providing substantive support for student leadership programs.
  • It is preferable, but not required if applicants have the following additional experience.
  • Developing or implementing leadership training.
  • Developing or implementing diversity and inclusion programming.
  • Counseling or advising students.

  • Knowledge of law school student organizations policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of student life needs of a diverse student body in a professional school setting.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of employees, be flexible in nature, and have sound judgement with an open and collaborative style that encourages teamwork and cooperation.
  • Positive attitude and genuine interest in working with students.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and external constituencies.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines at once.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Strong project development and management skills.
  • Detail oriented and efficient.
