The Office of Research and Economic Development at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln ( UNL ) is committed to promoting a culture and environment for success in research, scholarship, creative endeavors, and economic development. Conducting novel and impactful research that generates new knowledge, solves real-world problems, and enhances lives is among the most fundamental purposes of the institution.

The Director of Research Development is responsible for providing day-to-day oversight of and leadership toward the research development group within UNL’s Office of Research and Economic Development. This position will play a critical role in helping to advance research partnerships, capacity, and competitiveness at UNL by managing and directing the university’s research development services and resources to meet institutional growth goals and maximize faculty success. The Director of Research Development will contribute to Nebraska’s land-grant mission in significant and essential ways by:

  • Leading and coaching research development staff focused on key functional areas such as partnerships and programs, proposal development, and external recognitions and awards.
  • Supporting the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Development in setting programmatic goals and executing UNL’s research development strategies.
  • Leading development of major initiatives for a functional area of research development such as partnerships and programs, proposal development, or external recognitions and awards.
  • Conducting research and outreach around research development opportunities to enhance faculty competitiveness and advance institutional priorities.
  • Performing special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Master’s degree and five years of experience working in the higher education and/or non-profit sectors. Significant knowledge of higher education and the role of research development at major research institutions. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to partner with faculty and key institutional leaders. Self-starter and the ability to work independently. Experience establishing or making a significant contribution to major initiatives for a functional area of research development such as partnerships and programs, proposal development, or external recognitions and awards. High degree of familiarity with the university research environment. The level of interpersonal and analytical skills required to oversee operations for research development at the institutional level. Excellent and effective leadership and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing significant contributions to a functional area of research development such as partnerships and programs, proposal development, or external recognitions and awards. Experience using data-driven solutions to advance research development. In-depth knowledge of a functional area of research development such as partnerships and programs, proposal development, or external recognitions and awards. Excellent and autonomous, data-driven decision-making abilities. Solid understanding of UNL’s research programs, faculty, and their distinctive capabilities. Working knowledge of UNL research operations and broader understanding of the national research landscape.
