As the Director of Production for the Davis Center, this position manages resources and systems for the Department of Performing Arts as well as guest residencies in the Davis Performing Arts Center. More specifically, the Director of Production stewards the systems and process of production, ensuring shows come in on schedule, within budget, and in sustainable fashion over the course of an academic year. The Director of Production is also responsible for creating, overseeing maintaining and effectively disseminating all departmental production schedules and calendars across multiple projects (in coordination with the Technical Director, General Manager, and Chair and others); managing the production process for departmental and Davis Center resident productions; initiating professional contracts for guest artists and contract workers in a timely manner, supervising and training crews, managing production budgets, stewarding safety protocol and maintenance schedules, managing long-term planning for specialized theater spaces and shops and setting work schedules that resonate with the artistic and academic culture of the degree program.

The Director of Production creates clear structures of communication and accountability (including for approval of designs, work completion, and coordination of the different production shops) in alliance with the priorities of the season, the specific project, the director’s vision, human resources, university rhythms, the needs of the shops, and the priorities of the academic and artistic mission at Georgetown, as articulated by the Chair/ Program Director. Since Georgetown’s Department of Performing Arts routinely collaborates with other units of the University, professional theatres, professional artists, embassies, and other artistic organizations, the Director of Production coordinates communication around production needs between the Davis Center and all collaborators, managing expectations and stewarding logistical plans. The Director of Production recruits and hires designers and technicians (independent contractors, overhire, etc.), often in conversation with the Technical Director, respectively, as well as project director/s, to support the season and outside events. The Director of Production ensures that Music and Dance residencies in the Davis Center each semester are supported in a responsible fashion and collaborates with the Operations & Events Manager to coordinate maintenance and repair requests.

Playing a leadership role in the area of production within an undergraduate liberal arts context, the Director of Production serves as a mentor to a range of undergraduate students involved with production, through formal and informal courses and practicums in stage management, production management, production techniques etc.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Leads and manages production staff, assessing strengths, gaps, and needs with the Chair, fostering a collaborative team ethic with other administrative and technical staff, including the Costume Shop Manager, aligned with the Davis Center’s work and University values.
  • Maintains productive relationships with a range of faculty, staff, students, vendors, professionals, guests, and collaborators and participates in regular Staff, Production, and Interdisciplinary Programming Meetings.
  • Mentors and supports student Stage Managers for the Season, and confers with directors and Stage Managers periodically to gauge areas of stress and success across the process.
  • Manages season planning by documenting priorities, models, and project parameters, including residencies, workshops, full-scale projects, rentals, and special events. Facilitates post-mortems with faculty, staff, students, and guest artists to ensure follow-up and alignment with annual goals, balancing artistic value, sustainability, teaching, learning, community engagement, and collaboration.
  • Guides and facilitates all director/design teams through the design and approval process for the season to guarantee the timely completion of designs within budgets, respecting project vision and educational priorities.
  • Ensures the safe operation and maintenance of Davis Center’s performance spaces and equipment, implementing necessary repairs and upgrades. Oversees Front of House and Box Office systems to align with best practices and project needs.
  • Initiates and tracks professional contracts for guest artists and overhire technicians, working closely with the General Manager and Technical Director.

Work Interactions

The Director of Production reports directly to the General Manager and Chair. This position requires the ability to maintain working relationships with a range of faculty, staff, students, vendors, professionals, guests to campus, and prospective collaborators; they will staff projects in alliance with the project director, Technical Director, and other staff, anticipating in advance where contract hires will be critical to aid either shop and/or provide technical support on specific projects. The Director of Production also works closely with the Chair, Program Directors, DPA administrative staff and the College and University finance offices on the creation and effective management of production and maintenance budgets. The Director of Production assesses the strengths and gaps of production staff to assure they are deployed effectively and can collectively meet benchmarks; at times they participate in hands-on production work to cultivate team ethic and strategically fill needs. The Director of Production also works closely with Program Directors and the Community Engagement & Development Manager to smoothly support collaborations with other organizations. The Director of Production must move between macro focus and details, shifting gears and communicating effectively across modes in a fast-paced multifaceted performing arts center that centers the intersections of learning, artistic excellence, liberal arts’ public engagement, and community life. This position also engages extensively with students, modeling and offering mentorship for the many students who are engaged with production management, stage management and other aspects of the production process, with a particular awareness of and experience with models that value and foreground diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of the production process.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • B.A. required
  • At least 5-7 of professional experience in theatrical production management, ideally in an academic setting
  • At least five years of experience managing a venue or program with multiple collaborating producing partners
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage production calendars and budgets for a highly complex producing organization with many stakeholders (faculty, visiting artists, students etc.)
  • Must be highly organized
  • Demonstrated ability in effectively managing and supervising a team of professional staff with varied skill sets and responsibilities
  • Strong leadership
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills
  • A commitment to and experience fostering core values of diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of the production process
  • Experience in effectively mentoring students with strong interests in production management, stage management, new work development, and other areas of production

Preferred Requirements And Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in Production, Arts Management or related field
  • Background in teaching and/or mentoring University students in areas of production, ideally within a broader liberal arts context
  • Some specific demonstrable area of professional production skill (stage management, sound, lighting, projections, etc.)

This position has been designated as On-Campus and required to work some nights and weekends. Pay Range

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$66,783.00 - $126,720.23

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
