Director of Production


Organizational Overview: Providing creative youth development programs in San Mateo County since 2018, EPACENTER amplifies the creative potential in every young person. EPACENTER's mission is to increase opportunities for youth and young adults, ages 6-25, to discover and amplify their talents, realize their potential, and impact the world through creativity. EPACENTER offers youth tuition-free classes during the school year and summer in animation, visual art, dance, music, video and digital media, internships in high-wage creative fields, and the opportunity to shape their community through leadership and community service projects. EPACENTER envisions a future where all young people develop their talents, apply their creative capacity, and change their lives and community��for the better. EPACENTER serves 1100 youth per year through its own and partner programs, with programming taking place at its 25,000-square-foot multidisciplinary facility that includes visual, dance and recording studios, a gallery, a maker space, digital media labs, music practice rooms, a black box theater and an outdoor amphitheater.


Position Overview: Reporting to the Executive Director, and working in close collaboration with youth, professional artists and producers, the Director of Production oversees and manages media, art and cultural productions for EPACENTER with a goal of accelerating positive youth development outcomes for youth and young adults, ages 6-25, in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The Director of Production oversees the: 1.) Development and installation of exhibitions and public art; 2.) Creation of content for distribution through digital platforms; 3.) Production of multi-disciplinary performances, concerts and festivals; and 4.) Generation of revenue from installations, commissions, digital content, and events.


The position develops and implements high-quality productions that foster creative placemaking and works with professional artists, designers, event vendors, and other independent contractors to achieve creative youth development outcomes.


As the Production Division within EPACENTER is in its infancy, the Director of Production is directly responsible for growing the division and scaling it upward. This position requires visionary leadership, strategic thinking, youth development experience, managerial skills, and a substantial track record of producing innovative digital content, public art, cultural performances, and exhibitions.

 

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES


Leadership


  • Collaborating with the executive team and youth stakeholders to establish long-term strategic goals and objectives for the organization’s production wing
  • Creating objectives, processes, and procedures for the production team, and connecting staff member work to EPACENTER’s strategic goals, mission, and values
  • Developing an innovative strategy and revenue generation plan for EPACENTER’s production division that promotes curiosity, exploration, creativity, mastery, social-emotional growth and skills development in youth served in alignment with the strategic objectives of the organization
  • Building relationships and working well with an established roster of professional artists, producers and vendors, and identifying and selecting new artists and producers for dynamic, forward-thinking, youth-inspired projects 
  • Developing and pursuing special projects and initiatives based on trends, markets, constituent interests, and funding opportunities
  • Establishing and maintaining positive and effective working partnerships with production partners, including arts organizations, institutions of higher education, non-profits, government agencies, corporations, and other entities
  • Representing the organization to funders, partners, youth, parents, the press, and the community-at-large
  • Serving on the organization’s executive leadership committee


Artistic & Curatorial


  • Working in collaboration with the Executive Director to conceive, design and implement a curatorial vision for innovative media, art, and cultural initiatives that activate the EPACENTER facility as an arts and culture destination, an entertainment venue, and gathering place for youth, and create an online media presence for the organization
  • Overseeing the creation of content for digital platforms online, and the production of art activations, panel discussions, convenings, talks, conferences, exhibitions, festivals, concerts, performances, films, videos, and public art projects at the venue and at multiple locations throughout the Peninsula
  • Partnering with professional artists, producers, and consultants on the curatorial vision for specific media, art, and cultural initiatives
  • Leading discussions with and engaging youth in the curatorial and visioning process


Production Management


  • Overseeing the management and production of community cultural performances, and EPACENTER youth media, art, and cultural initiatives
  • Ensuring projects support diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility
  • Guiding the development of promotional catalogs, ticket sales, and registration

 

Staff & Vendor Oversight


  • Recruiting, developing and supervising a cohort of direct reports, vendors, consultants, etc.
  • Setting employee performance goals, conducting routine coaching and evaluating performance
  • Preparing contracts and memoranda of understanding
  • Creating schedules for staff and approving number of hours worked
  • Addressing HR issues, employee disputes, and disciplinary actions as needed

   

Financial Management


  • Managing departmental and project budgets
  • Preparing an annual budget request and managing the annual program budget allocation
  • Overseeing expenses, analyzing programmatic expenditures, and ensuring cost-effectiveness within the division
  • Providing recommendations on capital and equipment expenditures

 

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Minimum of 10+ years of demonstrated experience in a similar senior level role at an arts center or in content creation
  • Direct supervisory experience (8+ years preferred) in successfully leading and managing a workforce
  • Proven track record of producing innovative digital content, public art, cultural performances, and exhibitions in multi-cultural environments
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills


POSITION DETAILS


  • Full-Time Work Week: 37.5 hours per week
  • Work Mode: On-site
  • Able to Work on Weekdays and Weekends


EDUCATION


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required


WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting

  • Manipulation of computer keyboard 
  • Use of computer monitor, telephone, copier machine and other office equipment
