Position Summary

Are you a dynamic leader who can tackle complex challenges and build connected and cohesive teams? If so, our newly created Director of Admissions position might be for you.

As the Director of Admissions, you will shape the direction of our student recruitment efforts and ensure we compete successfully in a global marketplace as we work to expand our admissions team in support of American Public University (APU) student enrollment.

You will lead this specially equipped, remote team as they work to serve students with diverse goals and needs, including working adults, parents, and first-generation college students.

This role allows you to innovate, make strategic decisions, and drive continuous improvement as you build and manage the team's day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the APUS Admissions team to achieve strategic goals and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. Including day-to-day operations, hiring, training, coaching, evaluation, and personnel development.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and infrastructure to align staff responsibilities and enhance departmental effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Provide leadership in developing systems, programs, and services, creating a student-centered, customer service-oriented environment, ensuring ease of entry into APUS, and upholding university policies and admission requirements.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of admissions activities and recommend innovative methods for continuous improvement.
  • In conjunction with the VP of Admissions, establish long—and short-range departmental goals, objectives, and strategies.
  • Maintain and improve systems and reporting to evaluate new students' progress from application to course completion.
  • Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with faculty, executives, and other staff to address the needs of new students.
  • Inform, upskill, and educate other departments, leadership, and external organizations through presentations/briefings.
  • Assist and advise academics and other student-facing units in establishing their goals.
  • Stay informed of new developments in distance and higher education to ensure our processes meet the needs of new students.
  • Keep informed of revisions to admissions policies, best practices, and legislative developments.
  • Participate in university-wide initiatives.
  • Travel to physical locations for leadership meetings & events (occasionally %)


Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience in higher education admissions. (required)
  • 5 years of management experience. (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree. (required)
  • Prior Director of Admissions experience. (preferred)
  • Remote team management experience. (preferred)
  • Master’s degree. (preferred)
  • Understanding of best practices in the higher education industry, particularly in Admissions and Enrollment Management.
  • Understanding the needs of adult learners and non-traditional students.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and thrive in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work under time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently and make autonomous sound decisions.
  • Ability to monitor and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines pertaining to Admissions functions.
