The Director of Nursing (DON) for the Med/Surg department is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the nursing team within the medical/surgical unit. This role includes ensuring high-quality patient care, compliance with healthcare regulations, staff development, and efficient department operations. The DON will collaborate with other healthcare professionals to enhance patient outcomes and foster a positive working environment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical services and/or ensures that clinical services are covered by staff nurses.
  • Maintains clinical expertise and competency (to include age specific competency) as well as demonstrates thorough knowledge of procedures to deliver quality primary health care.
  • Documents delivery of health care and nursing process in accordance with DHCHD’s policies and procedures in a timely, accurate, and consistent manner.
  • Educates the patient and family/significant others about diagnosis and the plan of care. Acts as a resource for facilitating communication when necessary.
  • Identifies and responds promptly to changes in patient’s condition and/or clinic environment.
  • Coordinates and delegates the timely processing of patient referrals, prescribed medications, and other identified needs of the patient.
  • Supervises, advises, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates all nurses in conjunction with the Chief Nursing Executive and Human Resources.
  • Works with Chief Nursing Executive in the development of standard treatment protocols for disease conditions most prevalent in the Districts patient population.
  • Works with District Committees to review and revise standard treatment protocols at least once a year to meet the medical needs of District patients.
  • Directs Compliance and Performance Improvement activities for continuous quality improvement and risk management purposes, schedules meetings and maintains records for the committee meetings.
  • Serves as a resource and positive, proactive leader for the District, direct oversite of the Medical Surgical Nursing department.
  • Completes medical record and nursing documentation audits and implements system changes for the nursing staff as necessary.
  • Participates in the preparation of grant applications for the District as needed and assumes primary responsibility for developing and implementing the medical health care plan.
  • Serves on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and other committees as assigned.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
