Position Objective:

Harnessing the momentum of the launch of Tamara Rojo’s inaugural season with a successful Opening Night Gala and critically acclaimed world premiere of Mere Mortals, the new Director of Individual Giving has the once-in-a-generation opportunity to leverage the advent of San Francisco Ballet’s first female artistic director who brings fresh perspective and ambition to innovate the artform and industry of ballet for the 21st Century.

Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and collaborating closely with the Senior Director of Leadership Giving, the Director of Individual Giving is responsible for leading a culture shift from transaction-based fundraising to impact-driven philanthropy, raising essential operating revenue for SF Ballet through the Annual Fund, major gifts, bequests, and special event support. The Director supervises, manages, and mentors the Major Gifts Officer; Senior Manager, Individual Giving; Individual and Planned Giving Officer; Development Stewardship Coordinator; and the Individual Giving Coordinator to implement the season’s individual giving fundraising strategy for Friends, Christensen Society, Chairman’s Council, and Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle donors; and special event purchases. The Director also carries the responsibility of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a major gifts portfolio of current donors and prospects in the $50k+ range. Additionally, the Director works closely with the Senior Director of Leadership Giving to align strategies for special campaigns.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Using sound fundraising principles, solicits and stewards a portfolio of approximately 75 households, comprised mainly of donors and prospects capable of making annual gifts of $50,000 and greater, with a keen focus on in-person meetings and consistent stewardship to increase affinity, loyalty, and level of support;
• With individual giving team, plans and implements the fundraising strategy to achieve annual fundraising goals for individual and planned giving, and event support for the fiscal year;
• Work closely with Director of Development Operations to effectively use Tessitura to document and track solicitation efforts and results and to design a standardized reporting and metrics-based tracking system to inform decision making and ongoing fundraising strategy
• Represents SF Ballet in the community while also being very visible at SF Ballet events and at the WMOH during performances during Nutcracker and the Repertory Season.
• Effectively guides staff in solicitation, research, and donor relations;
• Hires, manages, and motivates members of the individual giving team, providing coaching and support to ensure revenue targets are met;
• Ensures effective communications with Chief Philanthropy Officer and Senior Director of Leadership Giving regarding status of solicitations and prospects;
• Oversees the liaisons to volunteer donor groups, including Young Patrons Circle and Allegro Circle, and guides those groups to work in the most efficient and effective way to support the mission of SF Ballet;
• Develops and maintains productive working relationships with Artistic, Education & Training, and other Administrative staff;
• Performs annual audit of donor benefits;
• Works closely with Director of Development Operations to actively use Tessitura to document and track solicitation efforts and results;
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 10+ years of annual fund campaign management and major gift fundraising with a track record of success, preferably in the arts.
• 10+ years of employee management experience with strong leadership skills, commitment to a collaborative and collegial work environment, with the ability to mentor a team of individuals at various stages in their careers.
• Proven success in cultivating, stewarding, and soliciting prospects from the $75 to $100K+ level, as well as legacy donors.
• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
• Ability to professionally and diplomatically communicate and interact with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills, with ability to manage department workflow and concurrent campaigns.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities, and meet deadlines in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to the innovation of ballet and able to communicate compellingly the work of SF Ballet.
• Familiarity with and/or passion for dance and/or orchestral music a plus.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and donor database software. Tessitura preferred.
• Willing and able to attend performances and events, regularly on nights and weekends and during the December holiday season.
• Able to travel around the Bay Area as needed.
