Position Summary

The Director of Development and External Relations for the School of Engineering is a proven relationship builder, an effective communicator, and a performance-oriented professional. In fulfilling this role and its related responsibilities, the Director assists the Dean and faculty of Engineering, coordinating with the University Advancement team, in achieving the School of Engineering goals and objectives in the areas of Capital Fundraising, Planned Giving, Annual Fund Giving, Advancement Services, and Industry & Alumni Relations. The Director will maintain strong relationships with 1) existing donors through annual stewardship visits 2) industry partners and engagement in support of School of Engineering activities, and 3) alumni of the program, as well as assist in traditional fundraising activities to include development activities with both industry and alumni. The Director serves as the lead contact for industry and alumni relations and activities for the School of Engineering, which include giving tours, hosting speakers, facilitating presentations, supporting strategic planning relative to economic and community partnerships for the School, and solidifying agreements for employment opportunities and other student engagement routines with identified target enterprises. The Director will possess a track record of fundraising accomplishments, constituent relations, and demonstrated capacity to work within a team environment. Working with the Dean of Engineering and VPIA, the Director serves as a key presence in the School of Engineering, conveying a clear sense of focus, competency and credibility to those who invest in and support the School’s mission.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the University Advancement team to create and execute a comprehensive annual fundraising plan for the School of Engineering.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and secure charitable gifts for the School on a regular basis. Lead, in conjunction with the dean and faculty, recruitment of industrial partners and of alumni for student projects, speakers, advisory board members, internships, and full-time employment of graduates.
  • Lead conduct of industry partner and alumni events on- and off-campus.
  • Facilitate, maintain, and archive communications with existing and potential industry partners and alumni.
  • Serve as a liaison between the School of Engineering and industries in the state.
  • Serve as a liaison between the School of Engineering and its alumni, in partnership with the Office of Alumni Engagement.
  • Work in concert with the VPIA and University development team.
  • Creatively manage development activities and identify fundraising opportunities in an entrepreneurial, innovative and forward-thinking manner.
  • Commitment to continuing education in the field of gift planning and external relations.
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Interface in a professional manner with industries, industry representatives, and alumni.
  • Ability to travel regionally and work some evening and weekend hours.
  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to: Title IX and FERPA guidelines.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required, Graduate degree preferred, STEM field preferred for one or more degrees
  • At least five years of significant higher education, nonprofit, or related experiences in the areas of fundraising, donor stewardship, prospect cultivation, and/or industry and alumni relations.
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in one-on-one communications and relationship-building with external partners, such as donors, prospects, industry representatives, alumni, and engineering professional organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) in relating to university administrators, academic leaders, university advancement staff, alumni, and other external audiences
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and attention to detail are essential
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and the Internet
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level university officials, alumni and external partners
  • Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people
  • Exercise independent judgment in complex and new situations
  • Proven ability to lead, manage and organize multiple projects with energy, clarity, optimism, diplomacy and integrity
  • Detail-oriented and willing to work in a changing environment
  • Have a broad knowledge of Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to Title IX, HIPAA and FERPA guidelines
