Job Title: Director of Development & Communications


Fund Texas Choice (FTC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help Texans equitably access abortion through safe, confidential, and comprehensive travel services and practical support. 


Summary: The Director of Development & Communications is a new and critical leadership position within the organization. The Director will have the opportunity to build new approaches to development and communications and to solidify the systems and infrastructure that support growth. The Director will be responsible for building Fund Texas Choice’s development strategy for a rapidly growing and expanding organization. The Director of Development & Communications will be responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program, oversee the communications efforts for the organization, and work to ensure the financial sustainability of the organization. This is a public facing position. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a key member of the leadership team, the Director will oversee development and communications strategy, systems, and staff.


Key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:  


Development (70%)

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising & revenue strategy.
  • Identify and cultivate major gift prospects, as well as corporate and foundation donors.
  • Play an active day-to-day role in donor-facing work, development functions, and compliance efforts.
  • Build, lead, and grow the development and communications team of 2 providing guidance, training, and support as needed.
  • Analyze and understand the existing donor base, while building strategies for attaining additional individual gifts and increase institutional funding 
  • Implement best practices across multiple development functions, i.e., direct mail, endowment fundraising, donor-advised funds, and online fundraising campaigns (peer-to-peer), etc.
  • Collaborate with the communications professional to develop and execute effective donor communications and marketing materials.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to develop and align all fundraising strategies and goals.
  • Monitor and analyze fundraising data to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Accurately oversee staff to guide them in maintaining a CRM system that effectively manages contact information for existing and potential donors.
  • Engage and inspire staff and the Board of Directors to serve as ambassadors for FTC and play an expanding role in development.
  • Provide quarterly fundraising reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to manage a substantial portfolio of donors and solicit new, renewed, and increased gifts to grow FTC’s base of support.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and appropriate staff on all stages of the donor cycle: prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Provide research, strategy, and preparation materials for Executive Director’s donor engagements; assist with follow-up and ongoing stewardship.
  • Launch new donor engagement programs and events to bring current and future supporters closer to the organization’s vision, work, and impact.
  • Plan and execute special events that engage donors and raise funds for the organization.


Communications (20%) 

  • Supervises the Communications Coordinator, who serves as the primary editor of organizational materials and communications, ensuring adequate turnaround time and staff participation in the review and proofing process in order to consistently produce error-free communications.
  • In collaboration with the Communications Coordinator, oversees organization-wide communication plans. 
  • Assists Communications Coordinator in setting communications priorities across various mediums including social media, print/digital media, stakeholder & donor communications (newsletters, annual reports, and more), etc. 
  • Provide input and vision for all organizational communications including annual reports, advocacy communications, social media presence, etc.
  • Together with the Communications Coordinator, analyzes the organization’s communications strategies and identifies areas where response or growth is needed.


Organizational/Administrative (10%)

  • Plays a key leadership role in overall organizational strategy, organization-wide projects, and assists leadership in maintaining a healthy work culture.
  • Attends All-Staff, Despartmental, and Leadership Team meetings
  • In addition to supervising the Communications Coordinator and Development Coordinator, the Director of Development and Communications will oversee any development and/or communications contractors/consultants, and will work with the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, appropriate Board Committees, and relevant staff to meet any campaign outcomes and objectives.


Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of nonprofit fundraising and development experience with a proven track record of success in major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, and special events (or relevant experience)
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, creative, and able to work with a significant amount of autonomy, strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to focus on overarching goals while staying on point with detail-oriented tasks and initiatives
  • Ability to work independently and work some flexible hours (occasional weekends and/or evenings) 
  • Aptitude for building relationships with diverse staff, board members, community members, and donors
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write compelling donor communications and marketing materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with supervisors, staff, and Board members. 
  • Commitment to and understanding of reproductive justice, and demonstrated experience supporting low-income communities and communities of color
  • Experience with fundraising software and donor databases.
  • A deep commitment to the mission and values of our organization.
  • Residency: Although the job is remote work, Texas state residency is required (all candidates must indicate they live in or are willing to relocate to Texas).
  • Grant writing and managing experience. 
  • 1-2 years of experience supervising staff, ideally across various areas of work. 
  • 1-2 years of some previous communications experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Every Action or similar CRM system.  
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certificate. 
  • Leadership experience within a non-profit setting. 


Status: The position is full-time, exempt, salaried. 

Salary range: $85,000 - $100,000  commensurate with experience

Location: Remote, but must live within Texas
