Stephens College seeks a Director of Campus Safety and Security. Reporting to the Vice President of Facilities Management & Auxiliary Services, the Director is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of campus security/safety programs and services. This includes security, parking, LiveSafe alerts, environmental health and safety, fire safety, emergency management, and access control. The Director ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, especially those related to Clery and Title IX compliance, and regulations related to campus security/safety. The Director also ensures that the college’s day-to-day security/safety functions, initiatives, and programs are consistent with all institutional policies and regulations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes a Safety and Security Strategic Plan for the institution.
  • Reviews all security/safety incident reports and ensures proper follow-up and investigation where warranted.
  • Manages programs and work units.
  • Performs analysis significant organizational programs and problems.
  • Responsible for department programming budget planning and sound fiscal management.
  • In collaboration with the Office of People Operations, the Director recruits, trains, and monitors the performance of qualified personnel for the department, supervising a full-time staff of 10.
  • Establishes personnel work hours and schedules.
  • Serves as the College’s liaison with all outside first-responder agencies: City of Columbia Police Department, City of Columbia Fire District, the University of Missouri Police, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
  • Works with the Student Experience Department on student issues and judicial matters.
  • Formulates policies and procedures which have crucial impact on administration, budget, decisions, and long-term policy.
  • Interacts with students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors providing safety/protection, enforcing parking regulations, and answering general questions.

Working Conditions

Work often takes place outdoors with varying temperatures, weather, and noise, as well as normal office conditions.

Requirements

The successful candidate will be a collaborator with strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, an individual who inspires loyalty and dedication among his/her staff, and trust and confidence in his/her community.

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and five years of progressively responsible leadership experience within a security, public safety, or law enforcement organization is required. Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • A validated proficiency to lead in emergency and crisis response situations, collaborating closely with all stakeholders.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the unique needs, culture, and mission of a women’s college.
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience with emphasis on team building, training, and protocols
  • A proven ability to create solid ties with the community and surrounding community agencies.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of the issues, trends, and best practices in campus safety and security.
  • A leadership/management style that is confident, open, approachable, and transparent.
  • An in-depth understanding of applicable laws, risk management, security procedure, policy, and protocol necessary to inform an immediate and correct response to emergency situations.
  • Experience with budget planning and sound fiscal management.
  • Experience developing and executing a Safety and Security Strategic Plan for the institution.
  • Must meet and maintain Stephens Driver Qualification and Vehicle Safety Policy.
