Director of Business & Legal Affairs (Remote)

You will play a pivotal role in shaping the dealmaking and legal landscape of our organization, working closely with the CEO, President, GM, and VP of Finance. Your responsibilities will span a diverse range of business and legal affairs activities, reflecting your expertise in deal negotiation, business structuring, and driving resolution to key legal issues.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Structure and draft a variety of complex deals, including acquisitions, distribution agreements, recording contracts, publishing agreements, and other innovative deals as required by our business needs.
  • Conduct negotiations with opposing counsel, artist management, digital service providers, collective management organizations, and other licensees, ensuring successful deal closures.
  • Review due diligence materials and key deliverables throughout the deal lifecycle, including pre-closing, closing, and post-closing stages.
  • Provide oversight to both domestic and international external legal counsel, leading internal and external teams to effectively close deals.
  • Resolve legal issues arising post-closing, including rights conflicts, takedowns, claims, and execution issues, while handling inquiries from various stakeholders such as labels, artists, producers, and third-party royalty participants.
  • Prepare legal documents such as cease and desist letters, indemnification letters, tolling agreements, settlement agreements, etc.
  • Draft, review, and approve letters of direction for payee changes from labels, artists, producers, and other third-party royalty participants.


Experience and Qualifications:

  • More than 5 years of legal practice experience, preferably with a focus on music law either at a law firm specializing in the music industry or in-house at a music company.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching individuals with diverse levels of expertise.
  • Ability to multitask and thrive in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Excellent management skills with the ability to influence and engage both direct and indirect reports.
  • Results-oriented and self-reliant with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Collaborative, flexible, and energetic team player capable of impacting both strategic and tactical initiatives.
