Background

Circular Action Alliance (CAA), a 501(c)3, became the first U.S. Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) for paper and packaging in 2022, and in less than a year was selected by California, Colorado, and Oregon to represent producers and meet the requirements of their laws. The organization is poised to deliver best-in-class compliance services, scale innovation, and build systems that help both companies and consumers waste less and recycle more in these states, and in other states that have passed or will pass EPR laws in the future.

Working with CAA presents an opportunity to be on the front edge of recycling system innovations that will have a meaningful and lasting impact. As a member of the CAA team, you will support the organization’s mission-driven work with our 20 Founding Members who are leaders in the food, beverage, consumer goods, and retail industries; companies (“producers”) whose packaging will be managed under these new laws; and a diverse array of stakeholders whose collaboration will be critical to delivering on the requirements of U.S. EPR laws and creating a circular economy for paper and packaging. We are looking for passionate, mission-driven, big thinkers to help us realize the full potential of the nation’s first EPR laws.


Purpose of this Position

This position is a new role at the organization. This position will lead Accounting & Reporting for CAA and as such lead all accounting, regulatory reporting, internal management reporting, audit, tax reporting and compliance, internal control, and risk management. The ideal candidate must combine strong financial, operational and communication skills to help the organization be financially sound and efficient. This position will also oversee and ultimately own the Financial ERP of CAA (currently expected to be Workday Financials) and must ensure the ERP system remains viable to meet the accounting and reporting needs of CAA as the organization expands into multiple states across the US.  

This role will report to the Chief Financial Officer of CAA and be a critical member of the Financial Leadership Team.


Key Deliverables for the Role:

Financial Accounting Owner:

  • Responsible for all day-to-day financial accounting operations including (but not limited to) Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Invoicing and Collections, Payments to State & Local authorities, Bank Accounts Maintenance and Bank Accounts Reconciliation and Cash Management.
  • Establish all Financial Accounting policies and processes including training and job aid development/management.
  • Lead month-end, quarter-end, year-end accounting close. Ensure all books are closed in time (including subsidiary books) and financial information is made available to senior leaders in CAA on time every time.
  • Ensure quality controls across all financial accounting.


Financial Reporting Owner:

  • Overall leader for the Financial Reporting activities. Ensuring appropriate reports are created, maintained, and made available to senior leaders on a timely basis.
  • Design and Establish capability, policies and processes to track and report project level financial information.
  • Lead all regulatory (State and Federal) reporting requirements. Ensure all financial information is filed on time and accurately.
  • Ensure quality controls across all financial reporting.


Organization:

  • Responsible for designing, developing, recruitment and managing a large organization of accountants in support of the work.
  • Must role model desired behaviors and ensure the broader accounting, reporting and finance organizations are engaged, motivated, valued and performing at their best.


Controls & Risk Management:

  • Understand, design and develop appropriate internal controls and risk management policies, processes and organization.


Experience and Professional Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA required.
  • Non-profit experience highly recommended.
  •  At least 10+ years of accounting and financial reporting experience
  • Through knowledge of accounting principles and procedures. Good knowledge of internal controls, risk management and mitigation and ability to pivot to critical priorities.
  • Experience with creating, analyzing, reporting financial statements.
  • Experience with Workday Financials highly preferred. In absence of Workday Financials, candidate must have strong experience across other financial systems and must demonstrate ability to quickly understand and master Workday Financials.  
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial processes
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and identify actionable insights.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and compliance.
  • Ability to build, develop, lead and engage strong teams, with direct or indirect reporting lines including remote employees. 
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment for rapid pace and with flexibility. Ideally understand and adapt to the startup nature of CAA. 


Compensation and Other Information:

  • Location: Initially Fully Remote (future location TBD, relocation may be required).
  • The salary range is $150,000 - $175,000 and is based on a variety of factors in accordance with applicable law, including the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and work location. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits, life insurance, retirement, and paid time off.
