Director, Client Services

The Director, Client Services oversees a team of HR Partners (HRPs) serving an HR client group at the university. They co-define the talent strategy and enable HR Partners to act as effective thought partners and key advisors. This role ensures the team is equipped with current data, analytics, policy, and industry knowledge. The Director applies leading HR practices and domain knowledge to ensure the team can transform business strategies into talent solutions, improving the employee experience and achieving business goals, while championing USC's culture and values.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, organizational design, development, psychology, human resources, industrial relations, or a related field.
  • Ten or more years of experience in human resources, human capital management, HR employee and labor relations, or talent management.
  • Four or more years of experience leading teams.
  • Strong knowledge of HR functions including total rewards, talent management, process improvement, change management, training, diversity, equity and inclusion strategies, workforce planning, and organizational development.
  • Ability to consult with business units about managing talent strategically.
  • Experience leading a team with demonstrated values and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated relationship building skills.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and teaming capabilities.
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of labor and employment laws.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Twelve or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in higher education or a consultative role directly advising business leaders.
  • Six or more years of experience leading teams.
  • Knowledge of HR client service methodologies.
  • Proven experience transforming the HR Partner role into a strategic HR service provider.
  • Ability to interface with all levels of the organization.
  • Developed client-relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work in a consensus decision-making environment.
  • Developed team-based management style.
  • Ability to mentor and develop staff.
  • Ability to enhance and apply strategic initiatives.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Relevant certifications such as CIPD, CPLP, ODCP, SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, PHR/SPHR.


Job Responsibilities


  • Applying HR leading practices and data to contribute to client unit’s strategies and goals.
  • Demonstrating credibility and workforce strategy expertise in interactions with client unit leadership.
  • Defining the HR and people strategy for the client unit based on industry practices and data.
  • Working closely with HR Partners to ensure stakeholder buy-in for processes and strategies.
  • Maintaining regular touchpoints with centers of expertise to ensure HR Partners are equipped with relevant knowledge.
  • Overseeing a team of HR Partners and providing strategic direction and leadership.
  • Integrating USC’s values throughout all organizational and HR practices.
  • Disseminating unit, university, and HR strategies to the unit HR team.
  • Performing other related responsibilities as requested.

The annual base salary range for this position is $160,000.00 - $162,000.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
