THE CENTER FOR CAREER & PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS

Formerly the Office of Career Services, the Center for Career and Professional Success (CCPS) is a unit within the Office of Undergraduate Studies (OUS). CCPS’ goal is to become a standard-bearer for providing innovative and transformative career development opportunities for students and alumni through robust partnerships with prospective employers and industry experts. Working in partnership with the Office of Corporate Relations, programs and services include career development, experiential learning, and corporate initiatives.

THE OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

The Office of Undergraduate Studies (OUS) is an established unit within the Office of the Provost, with the goals to meet and exceed retention, persistence, graduation, and career outcomes noted in the strategic plan. OUS focuses on transformative offerings through three major functions: academic excellence support, academic and career exploration, and career development.

Basic Function

The Director of the Center for Career and Professional Success (CCPS) provides visionary and strategic leadership for institutional initiatives involving career education, employment, and entrepreneurship for students and alumni.

Supervisory Authority

Supervises CCPS staff, including the associate director, program managers, coordinators, career service specialists, administrative staff, and student employees.

Nature And Scope

Reporting to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies, coupled with principled guidance from the Vice President of Corporate Relations, the Director is responsible for the management and implementation of a university-wide career development program that is aligned with institutional goals and the strategic plan. The Director maintains and cultivates relationships with internal and external contacts to include deans, university faculty, staff, students, potential employers, alumni, corporations, organizations, and agencies.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Leads the implementation of a comprehensive, campus-wide career development program, to include career advising and education, experiential learning, employer relations, recruitment, job placement for federal work study and other student employment.
  • Works closely with the undergraduate academic advising team in the Office of Undergraduate Studies to integrate career development support into the academic advising process.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Corporate Relations to develop career pipeline programs that support the University’s strategic plan.
  • Develops a high-quality employer relations program that will attract corporate partners committed to providing career opportunities for Howard students and alumni.
  • Co-constructs an assessment plan that identifies key performance indicators (KPIs), data collection, and reporting cycles.
  • Collaborates with Institutional Research and Assessment (IRA), responsible for the regular reporting of career outcomes as required by external agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Guides the development of digital and print-based marketing and information materials for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with deans, faculty, and other professionals across the University to support career development initiatives.
  • Identifies and pursues sponsorships and other external funding opportunities that support career-related goals and objectives.
  • Develops, maintains, and grows professional relationships with corporate, government, and nonprofit representatives to support career development and placement of Howard University students and alumni.
  • Serves as an institutional resource for identifying high-impact practices in career development by actively participating in professional organizations and presenting at professional conferences.
  • Manages operating budget (generated and allocated) and day-to-day financial activities, including purchasing and vendor negotiations.
  • Develops periodic and annual reports.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated public relations and marketing competencies that will enhance the University’s career development programming.

Minimum Requirements

Seven to ten years of combined industry and career services leadership experience at the college or university-level. 

Preferred Requirements

Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Human Resource Management, or closely related field. Ten or more combined industry and career services leadership experience at the college or university-level.

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

Expected Pay Range: $93,182 - $102,500
